38 Powerquest 496's
 

How fast do you guys think a 1999 38' PQ will run with 496's.

depends on how bad PQ screwed up the bottom.

I was on boat trader last night and couldn't belive the deals out there. Did you by chance see this 38?? Seems like a killer deal!

I've seen that one for sale for at least 2 years. The small engines don't help. It would be a struggle to get 70 mph out of her.

I was thinking upper 60's - 70 tops. I've been on a '99 380 with 525SC's and 12" boxes and with fresh roller cams and Hydro 5-blades it ran 77 MPH.

That don't sound very fast for all that hardware. I've got 74.1 mph documented on my Garmin with stock 502s and lab 28p B1s.

FYI- 98 to early 2000 sucked:cool:

When Ryan Cole hosted our factory tour he told us of the changes they were making to the hull of the Avenger so we new what to look for when we bought this one. He also mentioned the nightmare he was having getting their new boat dialed in, the 30'.

I have a 2000 380 496's best speed 74.2 gps. Light on fuel water gear etc... 30 pitch b1 labbed by BBlades.

I've been on that boat too. Accurate quote on MPH. Probably running 550 or so HP. I drove a brand new 2000 34 with low fuel, 5 guys and 502s, obviously fresh - could not get the boat much past 66 mph GPS. Probably one of the questionable hulls.

Yours is the fastest 38 with 502s I have heard about - good for you.:drink:

The 99 with 496's is a low 70's boat , ma bey upper 60's based on the hull work that may have been done. My recommendation is to stay away from the small motors and the pre 2000 hulls if speed is a concern.

As far as bigger motors go my 2001 with 575sci's does mid 80's and could see upper 80's with different props. Equipped with HP500'S and the newer hull ( post 2000) you should see lower 80's

Knot 4 me, Is the boat you are talking about Rich's?

Yup. I was holding/reading the GPS when he was testing props. He basically ran the same speed (76MPH) in the Shootout at LOTO in 2006 I believe.

Let me clarify that 77MPH was something like 77.6 - 77.8 MPH if memory serves. I know we did not hit 78 MPH. The conditions were less than ideal - hot July or August day, my 240 lb. azz was in the boat, and the water was pretty flat. Not sure of the fuel load but I know he was not on fumes. Toss my butt out of the boat and get some cool air, a light load, and a 2 foot chop and I have no doubt the boat could hit 80 MPH.

Not sure his bottom has been worked like some and who knows if the factory ever dialed in the setup with the extension boxes. 74MPH is extremely stout on a 380 with 502's. There may be more speed to be had with a set pf P5X's. They really picked up the nose on Rich's 380 and gained him some speed. With Bravo's his boat ran too flat even fully trimmed out.

Yup, a nice ride. We didn't see him on the local lake this year as he kept his boat rack stored down at LOTO.

Our 38 was brokered by Great Lakes Marina in Muskegon MI. for one of our forum members, John ( 38 powerquest ). He told me the factory did alot of work on it to get this kind of speed. He also did a ton of things to it like Mitcher T custom paint work on dash panels and the orange yellow fade paint on the sides as well a flat screen tv just to mention a few in 2005 then sold it to us Oct. of 06. This boat don't seem to run very flat with the Bravos but I'm no expert so maybe I should experiment with the P5X's next year if I can find the time. Any suggestion as to what pitch to start with and were Rich's labbed?
Why don't we see any of you Clinton Lake people on Shelbyville Lake? It's alot of fun there, we spent all of August on the water with the wife getting up every morning at 0500 to drive to work.

I looked up the price for the Hydro's and they will not be an option for me at 2 grand a set.

If I were in the market for a 38 I would pick up the one Perfectmix's (complete package )has or had for sale.What a sweet package... Jus don't like the monthly's$$$

It's been a couple of years since Dock 3 made a Shelbyville trip. A lot of guys are pretty busy in the summer now with baseball/softball for their kids so most don't have a full weekend to take advantage of Shelbyville. Always loved that lake...wish it was where Clinton Lake is!!! I'll see if we can get a group down there in 2009. Your boats sounds very nice!

Let us know if your coming down next summer we'd like to meet up with the Dock 3 people. I'm on call 24/7 except for the month vacation I normally take in August. We don't hang in Cove 5 anymore with all the trouble they've been having. We're in Eagle Creek Cove or at the Resort at night to run the aircon.:drink:

So basically what youre all saying the 38 is a great boat but like all other PQ's not fast compared to other manufacturers?
If that's the case maybe Phil Hall understands that and is looking to improve the bottoms to be a little more efficient and competitive?

My 2000 38' does 70.3 GPS with 502's and 4blade Merc props. All stock. They're not the fastest 38's but the have a real "head" and almost 6' of headroom in the cabin.

Our 2001 380 with stock 502’s, CMI exhaust, and labbed 28P Bravo 1’s has hit 74.6 via GPS. That was with two people, half tank, and hitting the rev limiters. It will run 72-73 most of the time. I think the props are more like 27P Bravo’s. The CMI’s added about 2 mph and a lot of midrange punch. Will be sending the props off to re-work. We love the cabin space for the overnights.

1998 with re-worked bottom (twice) and warmed up 500hp's

79mph at 4900 rpm (cruising props) anytime I want
82mph at 5350 rpm (lab props) perfect conditions

GPS fact not speedo or it felt like:rolleyes:

The bottom is the key, get it right and the boat will have the speeds. The other and should say #1 problem but directly related to the bottom (add rocker) and center of gravity is of course bow lift. Get the bow up!
Longer tabs (380's) at neutral give the boat a longer feel stabilizing the high speed runs.

BTW I had heard that extension boxes would slow the 380 down

Well hello everyone. Ok the best I ever got was 81.6 gps during a speed run on Clinton lake (Wallys gps) 1/2 tank of fuel and just me. I was running p5x 29 pitch with no lab work done. I had the motors redone in 06 and I am running just over 600hp (suposidly). Dave if you are getting that kind of speed out of 502s that awsome. You should try the 5 blades they lift the bow and make the boat perform better overall imo. Dykstra first thank you, we love the boat it is perfect for us in LOTO. Second I would think that a 99 with 496 HOs should run in the low 70s maybe mid if its set up right. Good luck.

380 with 525's ---- runs 83-85 GPS...

I ran a 2005 38 at LOTO with 496's ( still for sale on line ) and the best we could get out of it was 72 on GPS - three in the boat and almost no fuel. My 05 with 525's is a steady 85 mph GPS boat with hydromotive custom 5 blades. The best I could ever get out of it with these new props was 87 and that was this October in perfect conditions.

Good to hear from you! The river was pretty quiet this year. We were out most every weekend. We made quite a few trips to the gravel pit, but there was never more than a dozen boats in there at any time. Hope to see you all out next year!

Good to hear from you. Did not run into you last year while we were in the ozarks. Seemed to me that the lake was dead this year compared to years past.

We should be there during the last two weeks of July. We are also looking at running up the Michigan coast some time next summer for something different to do.
