Loose hinges?
 Still trying to get an answer on how to repair the hinges of the engine hatch cover on my 280. The hinge screws on one hinge came completly out of the engine cover. The screws don't seem to catch on any type of nut in the hole. I'm affraid I'm going to have to remove the pad to make the repair. Has anyone had to make this repair? Your advise is greatly appreciated.

I am not sure what you application looks like but I would try a "jack nut" or "Rivnut" These are Kind of like a pop rivit thing. You would first drill a hole. Put the jacknut in the hole tighten down with a ratchet, the collapsable wings on the inside hold the fastner in place. Then you mount the hinge to it with machine screws. 12-24 and 1/4-20 are popular sizes. They sell a tool to install them but I made one out of a tube and washers. I would think a hardware store would have them. The only problem I would see is when finished there is a small lip on them this would not allow your hinge to sit flush but it would most likely still work fine.
I found a link for you: http://www.emhart.com/products/pop.html |
Thanks for the link. I will try it.
