P.Q kplanes
can anyone help me decide which k-planes will be the best for my boat?
290 Enitcer twin 502's runs upper 70's - it hase more speed, but its' a little loose at high speeds. any advice is appreciated |
upper 70s with more left in it??
I take it the engine have had work done to them or thats speedo non GPS speeds.. stick with the 280 Kplanes and add hydraulic steering...290s do like to chine walk at higher speeds..no fix for it..they have a rocker built into the hull right in front of the tabs which adds to the chine walk but helps with porposing.. |
yes - i bought the boat off of here last winter out of long island. i was told the motors were built by oean offshore, in conneticut?? they run great, very strong sounding! i went through all the external parts to keep it fresh.
Is there any thing in can do to stop the chime walk? I found a pair of 380 k planes, what you think? |
it is on GPS - and it does have lathym extermal steering. i'm trying to figure out how to post a pic up here lol
|
I'd like to see that kinda speed! I'm running stock 502's with only 23p 3 blades, and the best I've seen on GPS is 71. I do see some chime walk if I'm not trimmed just right on the top end, and depending on water conditions I can get it to settle down.
|
its on GPS - motors are not stock - i am trimmed up, and tabs down, so i pull out of the gas around 77 ish. It just gets a little squirly...im wondering if i can do some thing to prevent that?
bigger planes?? |

somewhere I have the PowerQuest test results from the mid 90s when I bought my 1st new 290 and it shows 64-66 with 7.4s...66-69 with 454 mags and 70 to 72 with 502mpi.. |
lol i will have to wait until next season to snap a pic of the gps - i know you dont believe me , but the boat runs that. The motors a built strong! Before i put it away, i will take a pic of the motors, and drives -
It doesnt tell whats inside, but trust me, they are BUILT! i know you " boatnt" know a ton about PQ - help me out ! lol Do you think 380 kplanes will help? Can i have someone work on the bottom of the boat? |

Can i have someone work on the bottom of the boat? as far as the chine walking ....Ive owned 3 290s and also have friends that own them and they all sometime chine walk pretty bad...it almost feels like they want to ride on the rub rail...lol...at time you can drive through it at times you cant.. I think one of the main reason is that rocker/shingle thats built into the hull right in front of the trim tabs..at higher speeds it lifts the stern too high and your riding too much on the bottom of the V of the hull..kind like you walking a straight line one foot in front of the other,as soon as you loose your balance you lean from side to side trying to balance again..not sure if you understand what Iam trying to say but that the best I could explain it.. again sorry if I sounded like I didnt believe you...290s are great/strong boats.. I like to think of them as a Lexus and not a Porsche..they may not be the fastest but they get you there in style:drink: |
on one of my 290s I also went with a set of 4 blades Bravo 1 26 props..that helped out alot but lost 1-2 on top end but at take offs and midrange they were great.

No, i appreaciate all your knowledge, i wish i new more of what is in the motors. I was afraid to put that up here, because its way faster than i ever thought it would go.
When i bought it i was hoping for 71 - 72 i also run 25 props and turn 5200 You descibed to me exaclty what it's doing...its scary at times. I just bought a set of 380 k planes, im going to have them put on over the winter. ( Potter Engine) i mentioned i was chatting with you on line, and he told me to ask you about turning the props out, or in, which is better on that boat? |
You should be spinning out...I tryed spinning in and made it hard docking..no gains that I could see..

I have those props and Imco -2's...........no chine walking, FYI.
the 290s like to ride with the nose high kind of a$$ heavy..the 4 blades lift the stern and give it more of a level ride ..better ride, less chine walking,,more boat in the water= 1-2 mph loss at top end....which if you ask me its worth it.. |
would the 26p give me a little better top end?
I hear you on the Chime walk. Some times it's bad to the point you have to back off of it, yet other times you can ride right through it. |
booatnt - thanks for your help, i appreciate it.
i'm going to check which way they are spinning - at top speed, it may be causing it to chime more than normal?? one other question - do you send your props out to improve them? |
502's should run mid 70's with Labbed props... I have 7.4's and I can run high 60's with a best of 69.5gps. Kid 288 saw the gps screen himself also
You need to run 3 blade Labbed props to get speed out them though, the speeds boatnt posted are with 4 blades |
i have 4 blade 25's on it now, and i have miage 3 blade 25's also - should i send them out?
do recomend anyone ? what it the est cost? |
I never had the props labbed on any of my 290s but last year I had to props labbed on my old 300 and gained 2mph...went from 78 to a little over 80 on gps..I would think the same goes for the 290s...
Bblades seems to be the guy to go to with any merc prop |

I installed a set of 19x14 Lencos on my 2000 290 and they helped..
|
cool thanks - i hope after the new kplanes - spinning the props out, and having the props labbled, maybe i can loose the the chime ?
i don't know if i mentioned , im usually in chop - niagara river, and lake erie |
btw - if you come across any used or good deal on mechanical trim gauges for the drives, and drive showers let me know...
I have spent a ton on this this year! ugh lol im sure you understand! |
My 280 chine walks at full speed also. There was a PQ dealer in my home town up untill they went out of business and now thay specialise in Baja. I know the owner of the dealer ship and he told me that its because of the step hull. All the mid sized single step PQs had that issue with chine walking at high speeds with them trimed up. And he also stressed that you should never jerk the throttle back when it starts walking, It will cause the rear of the stern to lift wich boils the water even more with the step hull causing the out drive to loose bite in the water and can cause you to loose controll and possibley spin out. He told me the safest way to bring it out is to slowley bump the trim down and you slowley reduce throttle. Hope this helps.
