wHIPPLE RESULTS
I picked up my 380 yesterday. HP 500 EFI's XR's with ITS system, with new style whipples.
The changes were as follow's 1] Transom mount low water pick ups 2] New sea straners 3] Boost guages 4] 100 mph GPS [remove 80mph] 5] Hydromotive 5-blade [no 30] Results: solid 12 MPH, from 81-82 to 93-94. The scream of the blowers is unreal. the acceleration from the torque of the whipples and the 5 blades is like night and day. The trim tabs are simply not required to put the boat on plane. The engines are running 5600 RPM. It is my opion that I need to go to no 31 prop's, so I will talk to Hydromotive next week. Steve |
Sounds Great! I know what you mean about the scream of the blowers, Mine start arround 3500 RPM.
What are you doing with the EFI Manifolds and intake stuff? I have two other engines I am planning on building and I am looking for a HP500EFI Setup. Are you willing to sell them? Do you have any pictures? |
HP500EFI'S
Raypanic: I am planning on purchasing two World products marine marine motors for a 30' boat and want to use the EFI setups removed. If I change my mind I will call you.
I will take photo's of my boat in the next couple of days and post for your review. Thanks Steve |
Hey steve, how about those pictures? I am curious on how much room you have in the engine compartment. I am contemplating a spark plug change and am not looking forward to it. I do have a couple of spare engines I am getting the urge to rig them up with the newer whipples......

Glad to hear boat is doing good. Nothing like gettin on & being thown back when you hammer the thottles.
I agree on bigger prop. Go easy on the takeoff's. The whipples build all kinds of torque at low RPM's & can put a hurt to the bravo drive. The drive is like a bucket full of water. The harder you launch, the faster the bucket gets turned. Sooner or latter the bucket will be empty. Question is not IF drive lets loose, but when? |

I did post 3 of my boat pictures @ the Photo site. There are not very clear, therefore I will post new pictures hopefully this weekend. Thanks Steve |
Steve, Nice pictures! Nice Boat! I am jealous. Love the chrome cmi's.

Sejman;
When I saw the pics of your boat, I thought I was looking at mine. Yours is almost a bigger version of my boat, right down to the graphics on the deck. |
Sejman - beautiful boat, did you buy that boat last year? It looks exactly like the poker run boat the factory campaigned last summer! right down to your bezels and engine room stickers. It was 500's, XR's and I believe, about one of the first boats Merc put the ITS on. That 38 had a write-up in PB on the ITS, only 2-3 mph as I recall. You coming down to the cincy poker run?

Wow Your right, I thought it was my boat. Tell me more about your boat. What Engine's, props, speed. Steve |

I purchased the boat at the Lauderdale boat show in Febuary. Sounds like the same boat. HP500EFI's with XR's and ITS System The boat had approxemently 40 hours. I did not see the article. in PB Magazine. What month? I had the boat delivered to Admiral's Ancher on the Ohio river. I had purchased my 302 Baja there from Steve Webb, A great guy and friend. The Boat ran 83GPS, the temp was about 45. When I launched the boat in May we saw 81GPS. I think the biggest improvment on the Avenger is the Hydromotive 5-Blade's. I no longer use the trim tabs to come on plain. Combined with the torque of the Whipple's the boat comes out out of the water like nothing I've been in. I would recommend the 5-blade,s to Ray, or any 380 owner. Steve |
sejman, how 'bout that prop on the 340? I have the same set up as Bill.......496HO's with 28P Bravo's. Bill had his labbed, but I have not done mine yet which I need to do. Bill saw some improvement on holes shot and top end. It is damn near mandatory to have the tabs down before throttling up on our boats. Even though you have 500's, did you experience that before your mods?

Steve - yea same boat. The factory had it down here in Cincy last July for the Poker Run. Was running right @ 81-83 stayed right with a 382 Fastech w/575's. The guy's @ Admirals are great, I met Kevin Hirdes (former PQ owner) there when I ordered my boat. If you want to come down here and run the river, give me a shout.
I don't remember what month, but it was a small side article and it was your boat. Maybe one of the other guy's remember. Kent |
Steve what pitch 5 blade hydro's are you using?
|
sejman, nice pictures. Very nice boat :)
Do you have the McLeod bolsters in your boat? Those look like a different type of bolster. I also see you have some extra guages near the compass. Are those for the superchargers or? I like the resulta of those whipples ;) |
Sejman,
My boat was made ordered last Sept. It has most options. Power are 496HO w/ York labbed 28's. I have seen 79.? on the GPS speedo under almost ideal conditions, but I consistanly get 76 to 78 out of it. It is a great boat. The BIGGEST complaint I can come up with is: the windshield and/or cabin door rattles! When your running in slop, it sounds like the boat is cheap. I have tightened up the windshield a few times, but the cabin door????? The Red / Yellow are reversed on my boat. I think I am the only one like that. When they initially painted my boat, it was painted like yours. I caught the error before they clear coated the boat. I too am interested in the props. Did you try those BEFORE you added the whipples? What size prop came on your boat from PQ? Hey all w/ 340/380's: 2 weekends ago I scared the S*** out me! I was in a small bay (more like everyones river) running in the 40's. I came up on a 35' to 40' Searay Sundancer from directly behind it. I turned to go over his wake and go around him. I came over his first wave in the wake and the boat went over that fine, w/ the props coming out (reving the motor) for just a slip second. No problem, do it all the time. I hit the last wave in his wake and the boat took off! The nose of the boat went SO high in the air, I thought the boat was coming over. It also went so high, when I felt it take off, I pulled back the throttles. It seemed like I was in the air forever; all I heard was air whistling. The boat landed nice and smooth, but the bow was up so high, when it came down the boat kinda bounced in the water. I think the stern lifted some and the bow dove some, a little bit of water sprayed up on the windshield. The boat handled it REAL well. I just kept driving on. . . no problem, but it did scare the S*** out of me. A freind who saw the whole event, said from his perspective, he though the boat was going to come over too. Said it looked like the boat was almost vertical in the air, and the boat was 5 to 6 feet out of the water!!! I have NO CLUE why I launched the boat like that. Maybe the wind caught it? It was windy that day. Maybe I hit another (unseen) wake at the same time??? Been boatin since I was 12. I'm now 44. Nothing like that has ever happened to me.   |
JUST IN! - jet ski and rider missing for two weeks in the area of Virginia Beach:eek:
Last reported following family Searay cruiser;) |
5-Blade Prob
I did have a no 30 lab finished 4-blades, the boat took all the trim I had to get on plane.
Now with the no 30 Hydromotive 5-blade's getting on plane is effortlessly, and no trim is used. I am currently running 92-94 @ 5650 rpm. I feel the boat needs more pitch, but Hydromotive disagree's with me. Brett from ARE said that he had Hydromotive modify another customer's no 30 props and picked up 2-3 MPH. He will be sending me no 31 props next week and we will start there. Both Brett and Hydromotive think the 31's will be to much pitch, I will keep you posted. Steve |
