need help engine guys

I need some advice on my engine build. Anyone know there ass from a hole in the ground on this subject? Because I'm a painter and most definitely do not. Lol.

PROWRENCH 03-04-2014 05:30 PM

It's a great attribute to admit you don't know engines, most can't. Since you don't have the knowledge, take it to someone who does or it will cost your dearly in the end. Don't let one of your buddies talk you into letting them into it either, boating time is precious and summer is short.

AJ POWERPLAY 03-04-2014 05:34 PM

What part of the build are you asking about?? What are ur goals? Not that i will be any help but people will want to know what direction youre looking to go:ernaehrung004:

drforeman77 03-04-2014 06:09 PM

that makes 2 who don't know their ass from a whole in the ground. that's why i took the advice of prowrench and took it to someone who did know. it was great last year to have a full season that i spent every weekend running the boat instead of working on it. since i took it out last sunday and it fired right up after sitting through this long winter i'll have to call eddie and tell him thank you one more time.

.

Are you the guy with the 100mph pro charged 280 the Eddie built? If so you are the guy I wanted to get ahold of.

Josh LaFountain 03-04-2014 07:32 PM

And I don't plan on doing anything my self. I have an engine builder that does some mild marine and wild street stuff. He's asking me questions like what kind of can do I want? And if i am wanting to run more boost? What kind of compression would I like to have? So I need to talk to someone with a similar engine for a direction.

Josh LaFountain 03-04-2014 07:40 PM

I'm doing a .030 over/509. Head studs metal head gaskets. A lil bigger cam. Not so big that I have reversion issues. More boost if I can do so on pump gas. Main Questions I have are... what is a good size camshaft for boosted engines that makes good power without reversion at idle..... what comp ratio pistons should I get?....how much boost can I then run on say a 8:1 srp piston......will I need bigger injectors with said amount of boost...... if so what kind/how big...... that should get me started in the right direction.

All American Outdrive Stage 3 or 4 and a 5 blade prop ... This is a must with that power and prop slip

Already in the works fish. I've had a big 29 hydro 5 blade for 2 years now. Just beefing up the drive /steering now.

That's mine . I don't know how much I can help but I'll try . Like said , I'm a electrician and try to stick to that . I'm running stock injectors on low boost . I know he went with a lot of pulleys to get there . A custom cam with Brodix heads . If I can help any just let me know . Just hurry summer is not far

AJ POWERPLAY 03-04-2014 08:44 PM

Nice! Details!!

Sorry to say, but if he is asking that he is no builder. I'd go to someone that knows that you can say I want X horsepower at X rpm. Build it.

drforeman77 03-04-2014 09:15 PM

Not to sound bad ,but Pwraddr hit the nail on the head . I had engine builder that builds my drag motor here want to do mine but when he had a lot of ?ss about marine motor I knew it was bad . I would give Eddie a call , I bet for not much more he's going to give you a motor tuned on dyno ready to roll . And you know it's done right .

PROWRENCH 03-05-2014 07:14 AM

I was hesitant to throw the name out at first because I don't have any personal experience, or even acquaintance experience with Eddie Young, but I've heard NOTHING but good about him. Marine engines are different.

+1. And Eddie is relatively close to you in Tennessee. Probably worth your time to call and talk to him.

Thebossbultsma 03-05-2014 11:28 AM

Josh I thought I knew enough about motors so I went out and bought all the parts my self to save money and have a motor guy put it together for me and that was a bad idea.

I over paid for parts that he could get cheaper and new exactly what parts worked good together and everything. For my Powerquest next fall I'm just going to give him both my motors give him a budget and he's going to take it from there.

Tell him budget and a rough hp and they let u know if it's do able and then I'll have ur self and Awsome motor for sure.

Josh LaFountain 03-05-2014 12:16 PM

OK. I'm not building a 1000 HP stroker motor. Its a simple top end fresh up and I assumed I might as well step up the cam a little for some better sound and a lil more power and up the boost a pound or two if I can without melting it down. For all I care Id be happy with a stock 500hp/525hp cam and stock pistons and keep the 5lb pulley. But thanks for all the great advice everyone. I know exactly what I'm going to do now.

Padraig 03-05-2014 12:18 PM

Just go to Eddie, Young Performance. Don't screw around with someone who doesn't know performance marinr motors.

You may try Bill @ Schumaker Performance in Greenwood, IN. He is a Hi-Perf marine specialist and does lots of stuff mild to wild. Not too far away and he knows what he is doing.

Schumacher did two of my buddys boats. He does do
good work.

AJ POWERPLAY 03-06-2014 01:11 AM

I thought eddie did your motor before josh? Or was that just the procharger?

AngerMgmt 03-06-2014 08:41 AM

Eddie has a great reputation, but isn't the only game in town. If you're thinking about Nashville, talk to Eric Betty of EB Marine. He builds dependable big power and has his own in shop dyno. Doesn't hurt that he's also a certified Mercruiser dealer! He's honest and an all around good guy. They recently moved to Hendersonville to a bigger shop. PM me for contact info if you have a hard time finding it.............

Be careful, the cam being a little "bigger" is not the issue its' the valve overlap. You need to stay at a certain degrees or you will have water issues big cam or not.
I will add that you DO NOT need a large cam or increased compression with forced induction! In fact most blower motors built for boost have a relatively low compression ratio and smaller cam.
