270 Laser or 280 Silencer

Hi all, I am new to the thread but have been reading up on some of the previous conversations and thought this would be the perfect group to ask. I am looking at buying a boat and I am between a 280 silencer and a 270 laser. There are 2 280s around (one with a 500HP and the other a 502 mpi). One they say is a 99 (has the 502 mpi) with a weekender package for 33k and the other is a 2001 without the weekender package for 40k, Then there is a 98 270 laser with a 502 mpi with the weekender package for 29k.

I am just curious of everyone's thoughts on the 2 boats. Thanks!

Links to the boats?

280 w/ 500HP if boats are in similar condition. If you have a family and will be doing a lot of overnighting then i think the lazer would be better for you bc it is set up more like the 290, not as sleek as the 280 but more room in the cuddy. Regardless you will have a great value. Post some pics.

Here are the links to the boats:

The one with the 500HP has the least amount of hours, but is also 10K more.

Also, the wife said she wants shore power so we can do some weekend trips on the boat. I was looking at some 271 fastechs for a bit, but the beam on them is smaller than the Powerquest and they are a lot more expensive.

Drock78 05-23-2014 07:07 AM

Do you live in the GR area? Unless you can get the guy to come down from 39k I think the 280 for 33k is probably the best deal. You could probably get it for 30k and comes with everything you will ever need for overnighting and fun. The camper top basically doubles the size of usable room on that boat.

Kicker82 05-23-2014 07:33 AM

I live in the Saginaw area, but it's not too bad of a drive to Grand Rapids. The only problem I am finding with the 280 for 33k is that the guy didn't put in his area code and he won't answer the emails I sent. So I can't get a hold of him. I know I could get the price lower on that one because it has been on Craigslist for a couple months now.

Drock78 05-23-2014 07:41 AM

Likely a 616 area code. I'm only about 15 min from him. I could go look at it for you if you get a hold of him

Kicker82 05-23-2014 07:58 AM

It was a 616, the first time I called someone else answered and said it was a wrong number. There is no hour meter but the guy thinks it has 530 hours and the 270 laser has about 500 hours.

I might try to head out and look at both boats in the same day. Anyone know the difference in ride quality of the two?

I am 99% sure that the 1999 280 with the 502 is my old boat. Always wondered what happened to it - I bought it new in 1999 from Pier 33, and sold it when my ex was pregnant with our first young'n. I freakin' loved that boat - good luck with the purchase, however you go.

Wise words spoken here!
The Bimini with camper enclosure is about a $4000 hit if you ever needed to have one put on a 28 footer.
If your wife is requesting the shore power then the '99 is the way to go, shore power, fridge, microwave and 110 power, sink and water, throw in the bimimi and camper enclosure for good measure and your styling big time!
The 502 mpi is a really good low maintenance motor as well.

Kicker82 05-23-2014 06:17 PM

I am driving out to look at both boats tomorrow. I am leaning towards the 99 280. We will see how she looks. Thanks for everyone's input, it has been very helpful.

Drock78 05-23-2014 08:27 PM

Verbi is right also about the 502...Easy, low maintenance and will live for 1000 hours if taken care of.

dockrocker 05-23-2014 10:00 PM

Assuming that is my old boat, I had that bimini and related canvas made - it was higher quality than the vinyl stuff PQ was using at the time. Let me know how the old girl looks, the pics make me sad I ever sold it... :(

AJ POWERPLAY 05-23-2014 10:23 PM

The boat with 500EFI has been for sale for a long time, and is probably the route I would take... Shore power can be added for a lot less than the 500EFI. The camper top would be alright I guess but not my cup of tea lol

verbi69 05-23-2014 11:11 PM

You young guys would drool over stainless steel tube headers and anodized blue engine parts.....lol.

For overall package, to use for weekending, my vote is the black 502 which looks clean.

AJ POWERPLAY 05-24-2014 01:01 AM

Want a weekending boat? Buy a cruiser... Lol

Kicker82 05-24-2014 06:57 AM

With having a 2 year old I really don't need to be going in the 70s lol. I wouldn't mind it but mid 60s is good enough for me.

With a young one on board you will like the shade of the Bimini!!

t10bender 05-24-2014 02:56 PM

Kicker82, looking a little older? 94 270 Laser? Around $18,000?

Kicker82 05-24-2014 05:00 PM

I ended up putting an offer on the 1998 270 Laser

Kicker82 05-24-2014 05:01 PM

The 99 280 silencer was pretty beat up on the bottom

I'm going to pretend that I'm 'young' and take that as a compliment! I'm middle aged?! but have always said that I may grow old but refuse to grow up!

Kicker82 06-05-2014 11:30 AM

The 270 laser is in my driveway. I took it out last weekend and it ran good. The weather this weekend is looking good so I will be out and about on Saturday.

That's low.......lol !!!!!

I recently purchased a 280 I found in Florida and was a former owner of a 270. I like the new style of the 280 but the 270 does have more room and seems to be better build. The step hull on the 280 does give better ride but if I had to do it all over again, I would probably go with the 270 or find a 290 enticer. Those three you listed are pretty good value in my opinion.
