Prop for a 270
I am looking to put a new prop on my 270 laser. I have a 502 mpi stock with a bravo 1 running about 62 mph and 4400 rpms wot with a bravo 1 24p. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Is that gps speed and your tach accurate? The factory operating wot range for 502mpi mags is 4600rpm to 5000 rpm, so yours sounds on the low side. You should try to get closer to 5000 rpm. Is the prop in good shape? Maybe try a 22p Bravo 1 or a 23p Mirage plus???

I don't know how to verify how accurate the tach is, but it was replaced at the beginning of the year. The speed isn't GPS so I knocked a couple mph off. I was thinking of trying a 23p mirage and I also heard to try a 23p bravo if I can find one.

I have a 270 with 502 mag and I'm running a 24 B1! I tried many props and this one worked the best. I got best top speed out of a Hydromotive 4 blade 24 but was slower cruising speed. I can do 64 mph GPS at about 5000-5100rpm. A few details about my motor is that it is a full roller motor with K&N Air filter, EMI Thunders & CP Performance program. I had a 22p b1 & 454 when I bought the boat.

My 270 Laser does 62 mph on GPS with a 23p Mirage Plus at 5000 rpms. 502 MPI

I ended up going with a 22p bravo 1. Running about 4900 rpms. I tried the 23p mirage plus, but it didn't have the same control as the 22p. They were both running about the same speed.

I've a 23p Mirage on my 270. 454, Lunati cam, EMI Thunder exhaust, 75 gal fuel, 2 people, and 350 lb water logged sun pad...ran 45 on gps @ 4000. Too scared to go any faster for now. lol.
Water was rough. 2'-4' chop, yeah that's rough to me. |
No way does that 270 run 62 MPH at 4400 RPM with a 24P, (sounds like someone has been listening to Reggie Fountain and his single digit slipage claims again which are not possible), low-mid 60's at 5000-5100 RPM depending on fuel and gear on right on the money for that boat as was the 270 with 454 at 45 MPH at 4000 RPM, the 280 Silencer slips about 21% at WOT over 5000 RPM at 50 MPH+, so your speed is closer to low-mid 50's instead low-mid 60's. I'd go back to the 24P full labbed from Mercury Racing (there's probably one in the classified on this site or ebay), if that's still a little steep then have the forward edge of the prop sharpened, similar to a Cutting Edge Laser prop but you're just taking the next step by sharpening it to the point of a sharp knife in your silver drawer, stock 500 EFI & 525 EFI's running 6000 RPM at 80 MPH with no trim on these boats, going faster than Hydromotive props for half the price, the engine will now pull hard from 4000 to 6000 RPM like it's supposed to.
