Yes, definitely a poor design! I guess modifying the back partition for easy removal will be a good off season project down here in Tampa Bay!

Got a buddy with a 29 PQ and the local wrench services both his sea water pumps without removing a stich of interior. It is tight, but doable.

A little cheat on hard to access engine compartments:
Raise the engine hatch up vertically and suspend it from above, or remove it completely. Then lay a moving blanket across the top of the motors and lay on top of them. It definitely improves your access
