Viper, I don't think there are or were any of us constantly running 70 or over. BillR might have touched 70 with some different prop but that would be it.

I think it takes a supercharger to get into the 70's.

I don't believe any of us had or have external steering. The boat gets a little squirrely at WOT so I am not sure how it would handle at 75 or more

I AM RUNNING A 454 MAG AND A 4 BLADE 24 BRAVO. 62-63 AT 4600 AND THE BOAT STILL GETS SQUIRLY AT WOT. I HAVE HYDRAULIC STEERING AND THAT HELPS SOME. CAN I GET MORE OUT OF THIS COMBO?

The best I have seen on gps is 65 spinning a 26P Bravo. I need to get the prop labbed to raise the RPMs. Lower one tab a little to stop the chine walking.. I do not have external steering. Boat is powered by a 496 HO.

I got just over 70 in my old 280. It was powered by a 502 and had K&N flame arrestor. I was using a 24P Hydromotive prop w/o a diffuser ring. The air was cool and I was running with the wind. The GPS speedo was just a tick over 70. I can't say that it was squirrely though; it would lean to the port a bit from prop torque.

I think" I could get 70 out of a 280 w/ a 496HO and a Hydro 24P pretty consistantly.

2000 280 w/ 502 mag K&N,Gil exh,MSD,ECM,fuel preasure reg.,bravo 26p finished by Bronson Hill, 20 gal. fuel, speedkote, 75 degrees, no wind, 6'' chop, by myself, skipped breakfast, 71.4 gps no external steering, tabs up, Very smooth. Before the prop was finished the ride was a little wild. Bronson Hill took a little pitch out and worked thier magic. The boat handels much better.

IMHO, if you're running over 70 mph in what is essentially a 27' boat, you need external hydraulic steering. My 280 ran a consistent 65 mph, and at that speed, the stock Merc steering about at it's limits.

As always, YMMV...

Viper, We are going to Kelleys or Middle Bass on Saturday. I don't know if we will stay overnight. This may be the last weekend.

DOCKROCKER, YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT EXT. STEERING. I HAVE THE IMCO SINGLE RAM UNIT AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES AT SPEED! I RECOMEND ALL YOU SILENCER OWNERS HAVE IT INSTALLED!

TOPTRIM- SOUNDS LIKE THAT GILL EXHAUST AND K&N REALLY WOKE THAT 502 UP. THOSE ARE SOME PRETTY GOOD #S! IM THINKING ABOUT THAT FOR A WINTER PROJ. GILL IS UP THE ROAD FROM MY HOUSE SO I MIGHT JUST DROP IT OFF THERE AND LET THEM DO THE INSTALL. THANKS FOR THE INPUT GUYS!

Have you read the thread about the home made external steering? Sounds like a good off-season project.

viper1 09-25-2002 02:15 PM

homemade external steering? sounds like a lot of work! I'm curious though.
