280 "X" Dimension
 

You guys out there with 280 Silencers, What do you have for an"X" Dimension?
I've done a search and come up with about 35 different ways to measure the "X", so for this poll, let's use the measurement from the bottom of the Hull (not the Pad), to the center of the Prop Shaft with the drive being at rest (level - or pretty close to it, with the hull of the boat)
I'm curious to see if there are any differences out there. I have a 2000, and based on these measurements, my "X" is 3". Does this sound right, or am I out in left field??????

Since I was there when we compared my X (5" on a double step) to your X Demension (3") I was hoping the PQ 280 owners would step upto the plate with some info for comparison.
You certainly have a legitimate and interesting point.

Looking forward to getting some help on this one. Been doing some thinking about installing a drive spacer. I would like to compare "X" dimensions and performance numbers on various 280 hulls. I have learned that PQ did some experimenting with the "X" on some of the earlier 280's. I have hull number 67. My performance numbers just don't seem to be where they should be. Although, since I got a 26 B-1, I sure like the mid range available.
I took a different measurement to use. This should make it easier to obtian. Either measurement will work!!!!!

Jon, measured using your first idea and came up with 3.5". I used a 5' level as best I could so that I could get an accurate reading. I figured this would be some valuable information since it was 1/2" lower than your dimension.

Upon coming online tonight, I read your second idea on taking a measurement so I went back outside to take that reading and came up with the same dimension as you 4 1/4".

Thanks for the response!!!! I've been in touch with the factory in discussion about the "X". There will be a 280 at the Annapolis Show. I'll have a tape measure with me!
If you get a chance give me a call (757-288-3308) I'd like to compare some numbers.

Got some additional information from the Annapolis Boat show. Ducky's had a 2002 280 at the show. Got the tape measure out and compared measurements. The 2002 measured 3-5/8", compared to the 4-1/4" on my 2000. I understand that I am comparing two different packages, 502 Mag vs. 496. I have the low water pick-up drive and the 496 uses both low and side pick-up. I'm not sure if there is a difference in the drives, however,the 3-5/8" puts the drive 5/8" deeper in the water. My thoughts are now to install a 1" drive spacer.
We have to take this information with a grain of salt, but, the dealer (Ducky'S) indicated very strongly that the boat will top out at 65 on GPS. Show boat was a 2002 with a 496 Mag (375 HP) hull ID PPN28121E102. Are these true speeds for a 496 Mag (375 HP)?

Still need more input for other 280 owners. 502 Mag owners, please speak up!!!!!!!!!

How much does the "X" dimension effect boat performance?

Jon - I'm probably not telling you anything you haven't heard before, but there are many factors that can cause you to run lower speeds than advertised.

I would rule out as many other factors as you can before you spend money on a spacer plus the cost/time to put it in.

Give us some info on performance numbers - rpm, speed. Have you calculated slip? Have you tried different props (specifically 24p B1)? How does your boat come onto plane and corner? X dimension is a huge factor in proper boat performance.

What works on one boat doesn't necessarily work on another boat.

How is your boat optioned? The weight of your boat can make quite a difference in how it performs. Your weight placement of gear, etc. can make quite a difference in performance on a stepped hull.

It seems that you could be on the right track with X, but I would make sure before you dive into that project.
