1990 290 project boat
Hello!
Recently purchased a 1990 Powerplay- Powerquest 290 project boat. I bought it at auction so I don’t know any of the history of the boat. What I have figured out so far is the starboard drive won’t trim up or down, the port engine is seized, the cuddy needs some attention and I’m sure that’s not all! As soon as I get to ten posts I’ll get some pictures up. Thanks Brad |
That is a nice boat. I was looking at them before we bought a used Sea Ray 27 Pachanga, twin small blocks.
|
Thanks!
Thanks Dr! Looking forward to getting it back on the water!

Update
To update the port drive does trim up and down with the trailer button but not with the switch. I did pop the limit switch off and everything appeared to look good with it, the wires looked good as well.
If the trailer switch works am I right to assume I need a new trim limiter switch? |

Good looking boat. Love some of the older color schemes from back in the day. Has newer (2005 up) Bravo I drives on it.

Anyone ever heard of the “Thunder edition” is that a real option or package and if so does anyone know what that included?

It kinda looks like it's lived both lives..... It certainly looks like a 290 Enticer, though. Thanks. Brad. |
Titled as a Powerplay. I’m by means no expert on the subject. I believe due to the lawsuit over the name, powerplay became PowerQuest in 1991. Seats all have PowerQuest on them and the dash is powerplay- definitely have an identity crisis! I don’t like the PowerQuest sticker on the side if I ever get enough energy I would like to remove it.

It matches your house..........:D

Then get the Hell off the thread! :angry-smiley-038::kiss: JK…. It kinda looks like someone tried to make a PP into a PQ, as it looks like the “PowerPlay” is in the gelcoat, and the PowerQuest” is a sticker. It certainly looks like both hulls, the PP and the PQ 290s were pulled from the same mold, and they both had the twin BB thing going on. I agree. While I am preferable towards the PQs, I wouldn’t want a PQ sticker over a PP logo, either. It looks like it could use a good wet sand and buff job. That would be an opportune time to fix that. Thanks. Brad. |
Powerquest was PowerPlay it started as PowerPlay then there was a lawsuit from Power Play out Florida and they had to change the name to Powerquest but it's the same boat same company same owners,
they fought it for a little while because their defense was that the company was PowerPlay, one word were the company in Florida was Power Play two words ,so in their mind it was two different companies, but at the end they lost during the lawsuit, they're boats came out of the factory with both names on them PowerPlay and powerquest , at the end they had to change to strictly Powerquest |
Great Info on them

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...380d18d07.jpeg So this weekend I got the port engine running and seems strong, the starboard is still seized (I think earlier I said the wrong engine was froze) and it’s not looking good for it. I tried to post a video but it seems beyond me. I pulled the nasty fabric out of the cuddy, YUCK. I am looking for interior options suggestions for replacement material. I believe this started from where the railing on the deck comes through so I’ll caulk that really good from above when I reinstall. |
You can't post a video on here direct. You'll need to put it out on YouTube, etc. and then post the link.

Pull the drive off the seized motor to isolate the Seizioness , i know its not a word but I'm trying to promote it into one.
|
Thanks tommymonza
Good news the Seizioness has been resolved. I can spin the motor over by hand now. Next on the list is to replace the sea pump impellers and the exhaust tips as I only have one internal flap out of the four. Anyone have a go to for ordering marine parts? I was looking at Hardin marine as it looks like they have just about everything. |

Swellcraft,
So, what was the root of the seizioness? Thanks. Brad. I believe the rings were stuck to the cylinder walls from sitting for however long, it was last registered in 2015. It still may not be any good but at least I can turn it over by hand now. Thanks Brad |

This weekend I replaced both sea pump impellers which look like they were overdue. Today I’m working on adding the Hardin-marine slip on exhaust flaps. The wet exhaust hose was a PITA to get off so I can’t imagine what it’s going to take to get them back on. |
What is in the top picture ?
Looks like the inside of a Catalytic converter... |

FYI. Have a buddy with those flaps that poked a hole thru a cylinder wall after coming off plane at an angle and the flap didn't do the flappy thing. After some use they curl up a bit and take a set to where they don't full seat flush against the outer lip. Just keep an eye on them.

Well the starboard engine is down for the count. After I had it running I put kroil penetrating oil in the cylinders to aid in any rings that may not have loosened all the way up. Well after letting it sit for a couple days I was going to rotate the engine by hand and fill again. To my surprise the engine had a hard stop and I could only turn the engine 1/2 way in either direction. So a couple days later I got around to loosening up the exhaust manifolds and removed the valve covers. The rockers were loose on cylinder three and the push rods got bent to crap, haven’t got into the bottom end yet but I’m guessing the piston is smoked. Got a good amount of rust in the valve covers and the push rods covered in rust so I am assuming the cylinder walls are in the same shape. Next up I’ll take a look at the port engine and see how it looks.

Got the stickers peeled off the sides of the boat. I have since used a color restorer on the boat, still a long ways to go. I pulled the out drives off to store in the basement for the Michigan winter. Working on tearing down the starboard engine to identify what it needs over the winter so I can rock and roll in the spring. |
Those stands you made for your outdrives look Great !! They look as heavy duty as the outdrive itself....

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...efa53d7cd.jpeg Finally got the intake pulled off, it seemed easier to leave the carb on so that’s the route I went. As I dig deeper into the engine it looks like I’ll be also digging deeper into the wallet. 😬 |
