380 Engine Options

I am selling my 34 and going to a 38.

Looking at a couple of boats including 500s, 496 and 415 hp.

Question: will 415hp power a 38 to 70-72mph? Is 415hp underpowered for a 38?

Thanks!!

Jeff

Raypanic 12-05-2002 06:44 AM

I think 415 is a little low, at 70 is where it starts to get interesting. 500's are the ticket but it is a lot of $$$ for an extra 10 MPH.

Raypanic 12-05-2002 06:46 AM

There was a nice 38' for sale last fall at Colony marine in algonac, It was barely used. I think it had 496 ho's

38 @ colony

Ray - thanks.

Only 60 hours on it....but the one side has several gouges in the paint. I suppose it can be fixed.

I am looking at a 02 38 with 496s in Wisconsin. Dealer boat with 60 hours.

Just need to sell my 34!

Thanks.

Jeff

Several of us have the HO's and can attest that they are strong motors. I even suspect they will pull most stock 502's.

I'm always amazed that folks consider 70, slow for a 8500+lb, 38' boats:eek: How many other builders can get near that?, you can count em' on one hand.

Avenger Angel can answer on the HO's, my guess 72-74. Should be $15-20K less than 500'S. Good Luck

Raypanic 12-05-2002 07:27 AM

I didn't notice the gouges last fall, and looked it over pretty well. Must be a "dealer option" If you are dealing with Rod at performance marine (http://www.perfmarine.net) He seems like a good guy and has a good reputation too. Good luck! Did you ask Rod what he would give you for the 34? He may be able to work a deal.

Good luck selling the 34. Finally sold the 96 34 in May. Almost bought a 38 with 500 EFI's but decided to wait until this year to purchase new boat. I would want the 500's if I get another go-fast. I know the person who owned the boat at Colony. Also ran in a poker run last year. With the 496's, it was a little off in speed compared with other's running with us. With 4 guys on board and supplies, we ran a steady 69-70.

If it were my choice, I would buy one only with 500's. I was able to negotiate some pretty damn good prices on a 2 brand new 2002 38's with 500's and all the goodies in the cabin. One in Illinois and one in Huron, Ohio. Both dealers want to move inventory. Price last summer was around $150K.

I know the 38 for 2003 with 525's hit 88.1 gps in lake Mich. It did 83.5 on the powerboat tv show in florida two weeks ago. They didn't trim it out right. Hope this helps. It had 33 labs on it an hit the limiters.

Thanks for all of the input.

Another question....are the 500's the Blue motors that need the top-end rebuilt every 200 hours?

My understanding is the 496 is not this case.

Thanks again.

Jeff, Check a few days back someone asked that question about how many hours before rebuild. I believe the general answer was about 400 to 500 hours before rebuild.

What are you waiting for 96 Vyper? Interest rates to go up?

MooseKnuckle 12-06-2002 07:04 AM

jmackin,

Interest rates won't go up by the time I buy. Might even be lower for winter boat shows. Because of the time last year and not knowing which boat I REALLY want for 3 years or so (Go-Fast or Formula SuperSport) we decided to hold on this past summer. Which resulted in a lot more money for down payment so my number to buy this winter is higher. Will have a boat in the water April/May 03.

The Formula is great for space and respectible speed, but I don't know if I'll be 100% happy. This is what the wife doesn't want. I think I just need two boats.... :)

Youve got me thinking about a 40ss, they are sweet! The one thing that bothers me is you cant leave them in the water. A boat like that would get alot more use at a dock rather than rack and launch, dont you think? I also think they are a little more than I want to spend. I talked to Dan @ J&J the other day and PQ is already out into Feb. for deliveries so if you are gonna order you better start thinking about it. He has a large dep. on the one I told you about but isnt gone yet. keep us informed to your decision.

The Formula 370-400SS are very sweet boats however the damn things are not trailerable :( which is what we do most.

Which 380 in Wisconsin are you looking at?

JeffGrice 12-07-2002 04:29 PM

I am looking at the 38 at performance marine in Oshkosh. Rod seems like a real great guy.

Jeff,
Call Riverview Marine ask for Tim Edwards, he is the owner. I'm getting my new 38 from him. Great guy to work with. I bought the boat from him at the florida boat show last month. He wants to put it in the chicago boat show in two weeks. It's the best looking 38 they have built. His number is 1-815-663-1000. Hope he can help you. Also my insurance will be just under $2,000.

Speed 38 avenger

Jeff: I own a 99 38pq have 500efi in it. If you want a turn key boat every time you go out buy the 500's and be done with it. The boat well run a solid 82mph on the gps with two people in it. Kentz on the board owns a 34 and he run with us on the Ohio river and Lake cumberland. He can vouch that I run this all the time. A litle history first I order the boat in 99 with 502 it ran only 68mph was not fast enough so that winter my son and I put stainless marine header on it. Speed increase to 72mph. The headers leimate 383 lbs in the back end plus let the motors breath better. Next year got tried of sucking everyone wake so we install Pro-chargers on it. Speed shot to 87 mph could n'tncontrol the thing then or I was going to have to put spacers on the drives in oder to steer it. Besides the belt whining all the time you couldn't hear the stero. Wife was always complaing about the nosie. So in the end I put two 500efi with xz drives on it and it is the best thing I ever done. Solid 82mph with 2 people in it. Running 30 pitch lab finish props. Jumps right out the whole with no prop blow out. I think I'm going to try 32's this spring because I still have some rpm's left.Boat might be for sale if the right offer comes along. Wildman1 aka Blondes Preferred.
