340-380 Canvas

Looking for someone who never uses their conv. or camper top canvas. Recently purchased a traded-in 380 that came with out any canvas, just a cock pit cover. Got soaked over the Labor Day weekend at the cove. Wife and I plan to do alot of overnighters next year and would like to put something up over our heads. Currently using a Anchor Shade, works great during the day to keep the sun off, but doesn't do a dam thing in the rain.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michael, I purchased a mooring cover from DeBore Canvas (Rick DeBore) ~4 years ago. He said that they made the tops for Powerquest some time ago and have all the patterns. They are (were?) located right in the Holland area. The number I have is (616)-896-6937, I believe the area code has changed?. The factory material is Aqualon, however he sent me various types of samples to choose from. I ended up with the Aqualon since it help up so good on the cockpit and camper tops.

Happy Boating!

MACTONITE

Did I see you a couple of weeks ago in the Clinton river by lands end? I seen a 98-99 PQ that day similar to mine with the checkers and stripes.

MACTONITE 09-03-2003 12:32 PM

Hey Ray,
You might of saw me, but my boat doesn't have a checkers on it. I keep it on the trailer but launch it at the sheriff station at the mouth of the Clinton River. The boat is a 1995 with factory graphics, inc. white out rails. What color is your boat trimmed in? I have seen a boat matching your description out at Muskamoot Bay a few times.

STILL LOOKING...

Hey Big Block,
I talked to Ricks wife, she said he used to work for PQ but now works for Tiara here in Holland. She said she would pass my name and number to him incase he knows anyone still in the business, but it sounds like what ever he was doing is no longer in business. A dead end I'm afraid but was definitely worth looking into. It was my best lead so far. Thanks again for the help.

They did alot of PQ's canvas pefore PQ started doing it themselves. They used to be called Great Lakes Canvas Outfitters.

I just got some Aqualon covers from them. Their work is quite good.

CANVAS SEARCH...

I just tried calling them but their closed. I will try first thing tomorrow morning. I'll let you know how things pan out.

I thought I had this mystery figured out. I just chased all this down for another member in the beginning of August. Rick DeBoer who owed Classic Coverings said he made the covers for PQ and made me a mooring cover for PQ 270 Laser in 2000 and it turned out great. It turned out that Rick's business has changed hands a couple of times in the last year or two.

This is were it gets confusing. I was told the PQ business was sold to Integrate Resources at 616 399-9409 who then sold to Great Lakes Canvas Outfitters at 616 399-2927. I talked to a Bonnie who said she was the owner. Get her to explain and enlighten us all. I think between all the numbers Bill and I have provided we are close.

CANVAS SEARCH CONTINUES...

Thanks for all your help.
I have left messages at all the numbers everybody has
given me so hopefully soon we will all have an answewr to our questions. I'll post again as soon as I hear back from someone.
Thanks again,
Michael

I would highly recommend the "aqualon" vs sunbrella. I believe PQ stopped using aqualon on 02 and newer.

No!, its not for sale:D

MACTONITE 09-05-2003 01:06 PM

AQUALON VS. SUNBRELLA

Thanks for the input Kentz. She said the aqualon was less expensive. She is going to mail me some samples of both. I can't open your attachment though with my membership. Could you send it to me at work, [email protected]
Is there any specific reason you recommend one fabric over the other?
Michael

Kentz 09-05-2003 01:25 PM

I'm no canvas expert but I believe the aqualon is water proof, It does not breath like sunbrella, so you need vent holes on cockpit covers, etc. Unfortunately I don't think it has a lot of color options, but........

I have found that it has a substantially longer and better looking life than sunbrella. It also is much more tear/rip resistant. I'm done with purple sunbrella mooring covers&bimini tops, looks like hell after 4 years.
My 96 260, aqualon cockpit cover literally looked brand new when I sold it after 5 years.

ps. my new mooring cover is sunbrella "silver/grey", the most uv forgiving shade they have:cool:

BillR 09-06-2003 06:58 AM

I second the Aqualon VS. other material.
Much better material and won't stain as bad as sunbrella. Plus it is water. oil, gas and other liquids-proof.

JeffGrice 09-07-2003 03:55 PM

What have your experiences been with Aqualon in winter (e.g. cold, snow on cover, etc)?

Thanks....

Jeff

BillR 09-08-2003 07:34 AM

Snow? what's that??

My boat is kept in dry storage, but the material is fine even when cold.

JeffGrice 09-08-2003 06:30 PM

Bill - rub it in!!!

Still very nice up here in Michigan so I hope to be burning gas for 6-8 more weeks!!!

Any way, need a break from the monthly fuel bills :))

Jeff

Kentz 09-09-2003 10:45 AM

Jeff, if it must be outside:eek: shrink wrap it, covers and all:eek:

obnoxus 09-14-2003 10:22 AM

My mooring / trailer cover is made from aqualon. It only sat one on winter before inside storage but it held up great. I did shovel any snow off of it just for piece of mind.

The cover has been on the boat since new in 1997 and is just this year showing signs of age. But I NEVER treated it or did anything the canvas guy said. Much better then Sunbrella.

MACTONITE 09-15-2003 06:45 AM

AQUALON WINS

After everybody's input, it seems that the Aqualon is the overall favorite amongst PQ owners and some others out there. I just received my samples from Bonnie at Great Lakes the other day and the Mist Grey Aqualon is going to be my choice. Thanks for everyones input and help in this matter.
Happy Boating,
Capt'n Avenger, Michael

JeffGrice 09-20-2003 07:08 PM

Got my full cover from Bonnie done in Aqualon - she did a great job....super service, super nice.

Michael, Sorry for the late post I lost track of the thread, My PQ is Black, Teal and Blue color stripes. I also have a full camper enclosure. It's not Sunbrella It's more like a reinforced vinyl it could be ths Aqualon but I dont know. I had windows put in the front so I could see out. The factory just had material there forcing you to look out the windshield (Dumb) Here are a couple of picts:

JeffGrice 09-21-2003 07:17 AM

Ray - I have a 340 with the same convertible top....based on your pics it seems like you used the same top but had clear materials cut in the front? Is that correct.

I am sending my top to Bonnie over the winter to have her make side and aft curtain so I will have her do the same treatment as you did.

Good idea.

Jeff

Raypanic 09-21-2003 08:45 AM

Jeff, That's correct. The sides are all clear and the rear has a zippered window too.

MACTONITE 09-22-2003 12:20 PM

Michael,

I sent you an e-mail, I see now you have a 1995. Forget what I said about the 98-99's.

If you cant post pictures E-mail them to me and I will post them for you.

Merc 600's x #5 is something I and others would like to see!

Great Lakes Canvas - where are they now?

Hi - I had Bonnie from Great Lakes do a full cover....I called the number and it appears she's moved.

Does anyone know if she is still in business or how to reach her?

She had all the patterns for PQs.

Thanks.

JEff

woogie 03-16-2007 02:42 PM

Anyone know who has the patterns? I called the factory today but just a recording - sorry we can't take any calls right now ... does not allow for voice mail but after a min. it switches and starts ringing but then no answering serv. Wish they had a transitional contact person. Saw some cars in their lot the other day but was late already ...

Someone gave me a number of a guy a while back who was in Hudsonville, or Jenison Mi. that had them in his basement?
Misplaced the #. Searched some old threads and looks like the patterns changed hands quite a few times. Ice is all off the lake and getting the urge for boat projects... anyone hear anything please pass on the info. Thanks
