Keep us posted on what kind of speeds you get! Good luck with it, that sounds like a nice package for your boat

I have a 95 PQ 270 Laser with a 454 Mag EFI 385 hp with a 21p Mirage (not a plus). I have not come across to many other 270 owners or info in this form. I played around with different props this summer and did not have much luck. I tried a 21p Mirage plus, a 22p Bravo I and a Rev 4 21p from Throttle Up. If I ever get it dialed in I would lab the prop that works best. With my original 21p Mirage full tank of fuel my max rpm was 4600 -4700 with a top speed of 56 mph with almost full trim, with a 1/4 tank fuel 58.3 mph on GPS. With having to run so much trim the boat seems loose except when on smooth water. Also the excessive trim seems to make the waves hit the hull at least ½ to 2/3 back on the hull. I can not run full throttle and full trim in any kind of chop. I would like to get more top speed, at least 60 mph, run flatter and my rpm’s closer 5000 max. I have Gaffrig gauges (tach) and gps to measure rpm’s and speed With the 22p Bravo I my max rpm was 4200 with a speed of 53.7 mph. I could only trim about ¼ to 1/3 any more and the bow would porpoise. The boat did seem to run flatter on the water and slice the waves better. Also when I backed off full throttle to no throttle the stern seemed to step out to the side and was very unsettling. The boat did accelerate faster in the mid range and the 3000 rpm cruise speed was up 3 – 4 mph to 39. I next tried a 21p Rev 4. The rpm’s were 4300 with a speed of 55.6 mph. The stern did not step out when coming off full throttle. The rest of the handling was about the same as described with Bravo. Based on your experiences with your 270 do you have any suggestions? What prop were you running before your modifications and what speeds and handling were you seeing? Your new engine sounds great. I would like to add some mod’s to mine some day. What’s your new top speed? If you don’t mind me asking what did the upgrades set you back? I boat in Grand Haven, MI. Thanks for any advice. Chris |
speed demon, I have a 260 with the 454/385hp. I run a 23 mirage plus. Stock I was at 4700-4800 and 61-62mph, with gill exhaust, b&m air cleaner and some cpu programing from Tyler Crockett I am now at 5000 rpm and 64-65 with same prop. I have run 67 gps with light load and cool weather, motor was spinning almost 5200.
I also have to trim alot, I always trim up till I feel the prop un-hook and bump the trim down once or twice. I also run with the sundeck cracked a couple of inches it seems to help. Jan |
Jan,
Thanks for the info. |
Call Tom at Hydromotive Engineering 330-425-4266 and tell him Paul with the Powerquest sent you. He's been working with me getting the best prop for my boat. He can explain matching mph with speed better then I can he really knows his stuff. You can gain at least 2-3mph just by getting a right prop!

pkspx,
What kind of prop and what pitch are you running? I have a 260. |
Im running a modifed 22pitch Hydromotive Prop
|
I was always under the impression that Hydros lift the stern? It seems that most non-step PQ's need bow lift.
