Spin in or out and what props?
 

I have recently purchased a 35 Fountain, non-step hull with carb 502's. i am spinning out with a set of Spinelli props. considering having the drives spin in for lift and any suggestions of different props. any help would be appreciated.

Do you know the pitch and diameter of the propellers?

Also, can you provide us with some performance numbers? WOT rpm and speed. Even some mid range numbers. How does the boat get on plane and carry itself?

Reversing the rotation is an option, but we should see how it is performing as it is currently set up.

The boat handles and performs great, hole shot is fast mid range very stable and WOT feels very solid, spinning in will make docking a task i understand too. i believe they are 28's but currently getting them checked to find out as it doesn't say anywhere. WOT is 5000 RPM and 63 MPH.

If your gear ratio is 1.5 the slip% is over 28. That's way too high.

Turning the props in will more than likely help your performance. And yes the idle in gear control will suffer by reversing the rotation. Trying the opposite rotation is worth trying to see how it actually changes the boat. Be careful the first time if you do try this since the boat will react differently. I don't feel as though it will completely remedy the high slip you are seeing but it will tell you what the boat prefers.

Check to see what your X dimension is. We may have a drive height issue happening here. Once we know the propeller specs. and the drive height, it will be easier to suggest different propellers or even the possibility of spacing the drives lower.

good timing, just got off the phone with Double R Performance about the props. They said they are 22-24 pitch. this changes my slip drastically to a more reasonable number, right? Raymond said that 23-25 Mirage standards, not plus are probably the best for that boat, what do you think?

Yes, your slip is much more reasonable with the smaller pitches you have posted. If you can post exact propeller pitch I can run some theoreticals. Additionally, what year is your boat? For quite some time the 35's were delivered with Hydromotive propellers. I think it was in about 98-99 that they started using the Mercury propellers, almost exclusively. This may help us with blade style selection.

If the pitch is 23 on average, your slip is a little over 13%. Not too bad.

Untill 1999 Reggie Fountain was using the Bravo 1 propellers on many of his hulls. Reggie wanted to offer Lab Finished Bravo 1's as standard equipment. Mercury and Reggie could not come to a agreement on cost. That is when Reggie started to use the Hydromotive Q4's more often.

Both propellers will work well for you. Each have there own qualities. When the time comes, we can supply you with some test Bravo 1's in 24 pitch.

Testing propellers is always a plus and I encourage you to utilize one of the testing programs available to you. Whether it is your local marine dealer or a high performance shop, as Throttle Up Propellers. Either way you will be able to try before you buy and get some professional advice along the way.

I appreciate all your help and agree that a day of testing as many props as i can will be good. it is a non step hull and the last owner had put Spinelli's on it and the boat handles and reacts well but i think there is a little more i can get, mid range pulls really hard and fast. i am going to start with Mirage three blades and go from there, unfortunately i have to wait as the snow is close to falling here. i will let you know what i come up with but for sure going to swap props, put it in reverse and see if i can get some more lift too.
