Best prop for engine upgrade
I am currently upgrading my 502's to 540's NA and will have approximately 700 hp when completed. I will have a dyno sheet. What prop works the best with my boat ('01 Fountain Classic, single step) with the bravo drives? They previously had 26 hydromotives. I have been told by some to stay with the hydromotives (4-blade) for top speed.
An suggestions? |
Re: Best prop for engine upgrade
There is nothing wrong with the Hydro's. If you liked them before I would try them again in the correct pitch. I would also try the Bravo 1's. They will give you better low and mid range performance as well as arguably the same top end as the Hydros. Labbing will increase the top speed on your hull with the Bravo 1'sas well.
If you have gone from standard 415hp 502's to 700hp. You will need to go up in pitch as much as 4-5 inches. Of course the rpm you wish to turn the engines will also come into play. |
Re: Best prop for engine upgrade
The dyno sheet will determine what will be the proper pitch. We also need to know what rpm the original motor ran at WOT as well as the top speed.
The Hydro is a good choice for your boat, especially for top end. Typically a stock Hydro Quad IV will have the same top end as a lab finished Bravo 1, on your application. Matt |
Re: Best prop for engine upgrade
The original 502's were rated at 415 hp and ran 74 gps at 4950. The new engines are supposed to receive maximum rpm at 5800. I will know more after the dyno runs.

Re: Best prop for engine upgrade
If you personally want to turn the motors to 5800, your current 26's will be close to your needs with the hp gain you are expecting. I would prefer to see you try 28's. I would try your current props with caution and learn from them. If you decide to test other pitches and styles, we would love to help you out.
