Props for 540 application?
Under General Q & A, I have a recent thread entitled Dyno - result of 540s. BBlades do you still recommend a Bravo 30? Throttle Up - Matt, I am still waiting for a call from a message that I left on Monday to get your recommendation. Thanks.

Re: Props for 540 application?
What did you have before? EngineHP, WOT rpm, speed, prop?

Re: Props for 540 application?
Before, I had 502 mpi's (415 hp) at 5000 rpm 74 mph. 26 hydro quad 4s.

Re: Props for 540 application?
Looking at the online prop caulator site it shows with same props at same % of slip at 5800 you should be going 84-85mph. Figuring your old motors were 415's BUT gross flywheel hp was actually around 450hp,new motors detuned slightly off dyno may be closer to 650 then 700 you might want to see how it acts with new motors in the midrange and top end with the old props, you'll probably end up with some modfied 28 pitch prop. When I raised the hp in my single v from 750 ish to just under 950 I was SURE I'd be going from my 30 pitch labbed to a 32 pitch, but I ended up just turning the 30 pitch close to 6000 instead of the 5000-5200 it used to turn, the 32 pitch just sits on the shelf collecting dust unless I run with a fairly light load,Smitty

Re: Props for 540 application?
Rebel, have you had your boat out yet? BBlades is working on a set of 30's for my set up. (which is very close to yours aside from the -2 lowers) your engines make a bit more power then mine but I'm willing to bet you will run the best with a 30P B1 prop.

Re: Props for 540 application?
Boat is tested tomorrow morning 6/30 with 29 Quad 4's. Trying to get the 30 Bravo's from BBlades for a trial. They haven't been returned yet. Then I will have a comparison. Will have to change props when I put -2" lowers on?
Thanks for the input. |
Re: Props for 540 application?
my guess is 30's will work with current set up & 32's will be in order with the -2 lower. (I went from 28's to 30's with the - 2 lower swap) GOOD LUCK with the testing & be sure to let me know the results. I'd love to see a back to back comparo. hydro 29 vs B1 30.

Re: Props for 540 application?
BTW Brett was awsome to deal with for prop trial. (he sent me a set of 32's but they were to big for my set up.) I had them the next day after speaking to him.

Re: Props for 540 application?
Sorry for the delay on the test props. Both sets are out and waiting to be returned. I called the customer as discussed and left a voice mail.
I really wanted to see same day back to back testing. However, take good notes per our conversation today and we will learn what the next move should be. I'm still confident in my first recommendation. |
Re: Props for 540 application?
Sounds good, Brett. I will keep you informed. Thanks.

Re: Props for 540 application?
Brett, did you receive my 30's ?

Re: Props for 540 application?
Ran Dom, How is your new shortie setup working out ? Now that you have some run time, do you feel the handling aspects are as good as the longer lower ? Do you like the Bravo shop version more or less than the Merc Sportmaster ? Lots of questions here , I'm still on the fence over this, and would really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

Re: Props for 540 application?
RaggedEdge, I feel my boat has really benefited from the -2 lower , the boat seems more stable at top speed with no negative handling issue's. I can say there really was no difference in top speed (1 MPH @ most) comparing the SM lower & BShop. I think you would notice it more on a 100MPH boat then in the mid 80's. For me it was Worth the 4-5 MPH speed gain. I'm currently having Brett work on a set of props, so we will see what happens.
Rebel Heat how did you make out??? |
