XR prop hub question
 

Are the black plastic/teflon inserts found on an XR prop hub necessary? I install and remove my props each time I use the boat, and the inserts in the hub fall out every time I remove the prop. They do not seem to be glued to the hub very well, and several people have told me that they are not necessary. I have attached a photo of the hub kit for reference - I am referring to the four small rectangular pieces that fit into the grooves of the hub.

Any thoughts??

They're called snubbies and I had the same problem. The glue was weak. But for 30 bucks you can order a set from throttle up, I'm told the new glue is much better. I've heard both arguements about whether to have them or not, so I error on the safe side.

Yes you need them. If you don't the hub may move around in the prop which can make the prop wobble on the prop shaft.

The new snubbers have 3m double sided tape to hold them on the hub and they work much better than the original glue.

If you can find some of the double sided tape at a hardware store that would work well also. Make sure it's thin and not thick, otherwise it may be difficult to install and remove the hub.

One option would be to weld the hub in the prop. That would eliminate the entire issue.

We struggled at Merc Racing to find a glue to hold the snubber strips in place. The problem is the pieces we are attaching have no porosity. Finally we tried the 2 sided tape and had a winner. Actually some one outside of Merc suggested it to us. The tape will intimately fail also but it will last much longer than the glue.

I agree, use the snubbers but, you can run without them if needed. Just make sure to torque the nut tight in the forward rotational way and replace them when you can.

I don't know if it is considered wrong by the prop guru's here but I just wind electrical or masking tape around the hub to hold the inserts while installing the hub. Has worked well for me for several years.

Great info - Thanks everyone, learned a new word today... I still have all of the snubbers, and I'll look to see if I can find some thin double sided tape to hold them to the hub better. :drink:

The glue seemed to last about 1.5 years...

As long as we are on this subject. Do all 3 washers go on the outside, ie. just under the nut? Is it: Prop, small washer, large washer, small washer in that order?

The proper order is;
Prop, Large thick washer, small bevel washer, small flat washer, nut. The bevel washer acts as a lock washer.

You can identify the bevel washer by putting both of the small washers on a flat surface. The one that is not flat is the bevel washer.

The beveled washer can go either way. We usually place it convex or the raised side to the prop nut.

On My Hub Years Ago I Cut Or Recessed 3 Small Groves Around The Hub And Used Wire To Hold Them On. Wire And Glue Never To Come Off Again.
