22 Scarab 454 mostly stock
'98 22 Scarab, 454 (non-mag, carb), stainless marine exhaust, otherwise stock.
Currently, I run a 25P Mirage Plus 3-blade prop. THe max rpm I've been able to hit is about 4200rpm, which winds up at an indicated speed of high 60s (realistically, probably low 60s, based on other boats with GPS that I've run with). I've tried a Bravo 1 4-blade 22P, and while it gets up on plane nearly instantly, the motor winds out to over 5K and I only get an indicated speed of around 45mph. With the Mirage 25P, I occasionally get some blow-out while getting on plane, especially if the water is a little churned up from other boats. It planes reasonably quickly, even with a full load, but not nearly as well as the 4-blade 22. A friend has a few props I can try, but I don't want to waste my time with any props that are clearly not going to work well. I'm curious to hear any recommendations as to what props would be worth trying. Thanks! |
Andrew, you can try my(actually Rays) 23 four blade if ya want, it was(is) a Mercury Offshore, it says 23 on the hub, but it has some work done to it, Ray says its a 24. It is a smaller diameter than a bravo, not sure what it will do for ya, but worth a try one day. I may be interested in trying your 22.

Sounds good to me, next time out we'll swap em and see how it goes! Worth a try, I suppose :D

I Think The Rev Limiter On On A Stock 330 Hp Is 4850..when I Was Stock Power A 23 P Mirage Labbed Was The Best. Did About 64. You Need A Round Ear Prop To Get The Bow Up, Bravo 1 Or A Old Mach Stern Driver . You Really Need More Power , Look For The Thread 454 On Roids

You will like the Revolution 4 much better than the Offshore/Trophy Plus/Ven-Sura. (they are all the same)
We have the Rev 4 for testing if you would like to try one. The Mirage Plus will have the best top speed. Especially if it is Labbed to the boat. The 4 blade props will give great all around performance. |
Would that be a 25 or 23 in the Revolution 4 that you'd recommend I try?

I ran a labbed 25 Mirage Plus with a stock 454mpi. Ran 66-69 GPS. Same boat with a stock 502MPI ran 72-74 GPS. That was on a 1996 22 Scarab. I tried lots of props, the 25 Mirage was the fastest. The boat handles much better with a 4 blade , but it's a little slower.

I think the 23 would be a good starting place. Let us know if you would like to try one.

If Andrew doesnt chime in, I'll give him a call. Saturday weather looks better than Sunday, but I may run over to naples to look at a trailer Sat., and Andrew works Saturdays, so lets stick with Sunday. |
I had a mirage 23 and a mirage 25 for my 22 Scarab with 7.4L EFI. I could hit the rev limiter with the 23 pretty easily at 4600 RPM. The 25 was much slower to plane and topped out around 4550 RPM with a higher top speed by about 2-3 MPH.
|
That was my experience yesterday -- I was bouncing off the rev limiter at around 4600-4800 rpm with the 23 Mirage Plus, and hitting an indicated speed of 63-64mph. The 23 got the boat out of the hole faster than the 25, though I didn't feel much difference in the midrange. The 25 Mirage Plus is slower out of the hole, but tops out at 4200rpm, and gives me an indicated top end of 67-68 -- probably not very accurate, but there's a 3-4 mph difference there between the 2 props. I'd still like to try a 4-blade 23 or 24 (?), since my 22 4-blade is clearly not right for the motor.

I've heard 4 blades don't work well at all on these hulls. Let us know if you find otherwise.

i have one, and it rides great with a four blade. Not the best for top end but for tubing etc

Andrew, I use the 22 bravo for sking and just general use. But I also know its not enough pitch. I have a 25 Mirage plus which is faster 63.5 Gps but I don't like the way the boat feels and blows out on occaision. I also have a non plus 23 Mirage, not good, went back to the 22 bravo. My experiance so far. Doug

Try a 24p hydro QIV-X. I run a 25P QIV-X and the boat handles awesome with it. I also have a 25p M+ which is exactly 1mph faster. I have been wanting to try a rev 4 so if you try one let us know how it is.
