labbed p5x

has anyone labbed a p5x what where the rpm gains speed and cost

CB-BLR 08-24-2010 11:41 PM

I have had P5x's labbed by both Hydromotive and Hering. They gain about 150 rpm with a standard balance, blade equalization, and sharpening. They then generally turn about the same rpm as a a 1" smaller pitch P5x, but with more speed.

ie.. a labbed 28 P5x will spin about the same rpm as a stock 27 P5x, but with more speed.

What I usually do is find the P5x that does the rpm I want it to do, and then buy the next inch larger, and have it labbed... it then generally picks up both midrange criuse speed and top end speed over the smaller prop. (about 2 mph)

Just my experience,

Chris

P.S. I live just down the street from Hering.
P.P.S. My boat is the fastest with a Merc Lab Bravo

What is the major advantage or disadvantage with going to the 5 blade vs lets say a Bravo 1 4 blade??

Rebel_Heart 08-26-2010 12:22 AM

Usually better mid-range with a 5 blade and most find a couple up top. If you're buried deep the 5 blades are harder on the drives.

We see the same improvements Labbing them here at BBLADES.

Bravo 1 props are typically faster than 5 blades un less the boat has very high slip or a completely rearward CG. Then the 5 blade props fix these issues.

The reason 5 blades are popular is the "X" dimentions are so high these days, you often need a 5 blade just to get on plane. Also the cruise speeds are generally better than with 3 or 4 blades.

I would love to try a 5 blade on my boat.
Aprox. 570 hp, would like to spin 5300.
Boat is large in my opinion for a single engine application.

verbi69,

Call us and we'll make it happen.

Will do Brett, the engine is out of the boat right now for pistons. I'll call when I get it back with some base numbers.

Do you have Hydromotives in the test program?

Brett have you had any experience with a DCB FX28 vee bottom?
