I have never used it, but is losing a prop b/c a nut came off a common problem??? Even when torqued to the proper setting?

Never heard of why you would need Loctite. If the nyloc nut is good and its torqued to spec you shouldnt have a problem. I've worked on and run everything from an Alpha to a #6 and have never needed it.

tcelano 01-07-2012 05:49 PM

+1 Replace the nylock nut every season or so.

I can't imagine one spinning off though. It takes a fair amount of running torque to turn one on the shaft, and it is seated on a prop hub that is splined in, and can't start to turn.

I'm guessing more people have lost props due to broken propshafts than spun nuts. I have seen it happen on inboards, but that is a different deal with props seated on a shallow taper, questionable keyways, and double-nuts instead of locknuts.

copied from 700 NXT owner warning. double nut

:boat::boat::boat::boat:Mercury had a "bulletin" that as far as I know was never sent to customers but manufactuers and service departments. This bulletin was to let dealers know that they needed stop using the number six style prop shaft single nut immediately in favor of a double nut system. In some instances this nut has backed off and resulted in lost props or even worse. Well I got to experience "the worst" first hand. I lost a $5500.00 Herring prop and broke the prop shaft. I found out about the "bulletin" after the damage. I was six weeks getting parts last summer and never was offered any assistance from Mercury Racing. The most ironic part of the story is that the previous season after winning the Lake Cumberland Poker Run a Marketing representative from Mercury Racing came up and introduced himself to me. The conversation was that he knew that we do alot of poker runs and that he appreciates us promoting the Mercury Racing product. He told me that if I ever needed anything to please get a hold of him. Man,I sure wish I had kept that business card. That letter should have been sent to ALL Mercury 700/NXT customers!!!!!!

Just curious, is your failure attribututed to the prop nut backing off first, or just a propshaft failure?

Where did the propshaft break exactly? What was left in the drive? Did it trash any gears, bearings, or seals?

I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks!

we have found them loose b4 as well and put them on and off every time we go to the water with an impact , the double nut idea is a good one most of the #6s i've seen around only have a xtra 1/2" of thread ... maybe there using thinner nuts

Blue Locktite every time, change the nut at least every year, have not lost one yet.

Chit happens, locktite is cheap.

bbladesprops 01-09-2012 07:30 PM

Wow, ok,

I spent 12 years at Mercury Racing and we never had #6 nuts backing off if the propellers and nuts were installed correctly. I was there throughtout the NXT development and we didn't have the issues you describe.
Also, no service bulletin for dual nuts has ever been issued as far as I know.

Pwrbt33, I'd sure be interested as to who you talked to from Merc. The only Marketing Representative left at Merc Racing is Is a guy named Makie. Does that sound familiar?

Change your nuts after a few on and offs and there should be no issues.

if i have to pull nylok nut off, i use ballpeen hammer to tap bulges between indents. i do 3 of them, spaced apart. just tap on flat surface will push nylon out. have used i think upper swivel shaft nut to compress nylok nut's nylon on props that did not have any other tab or cotter pin hole.

proboat-wes 01-16-2012 07:28 PM

i agree with bblades and have never had or heard of this issue, love to see the facts in actual print.

KNOT-RIGHT 01-17-2012 12:46 PM

I was asked by another member to comment on this thread.
So here is my worthless opinion.

I have lost my share of props. One instance a 5 blade 37 hering comes to mind. The direct cause of this prop loss was a nut that backed off.
In a perfect world one would never loose a prop on a new #6
with a new mercury nylock torque to 100foot lbs. The tolerances
are near perfect.

Here is the facts. Continuous use in a salt water environment
caused the threads on the shaft to actually get worn diameter wise The constant removal of the props and nuts causes wear on the diameter.
I replaced a prop shaft last season only to notice when installing
new factory mercury nylocs the new shaft required much more force to turn the nut.

New nylocks every season.......Yes!
Locktite.......Hell yes
Thin double nut locking..........Even better.
Arneson drives use cotter pins Call rik at Arneson and ask how
many props hes loss from a backing off nut.

For those of you who have put your boat in reverse and all of a sudden your engine revs in forward and reverse but does not move you will welcome the above ideas with open arms.
Those that have not....Bookmark this thread you may be glad you did:drink:

lightning jet 01-17-2012 03:42 PM

Ok so I'm at the sand bar with some freinds and I tell my buddy to watch out for the props there sharp as he coming up to the back of the boat,so he reaches down to feel the props and says to me did you know there loose. We got lucky that day now I put new nylocks on every two cycles ......#6 dry sumps.2c

Centsless 01-18-2012 08:38 AM

read up on how many times you are suppose to reuse a nylock
this should answer any and all questions.......

Thank you for your post. You are on the mark. Cotter pins a "must" save, or thinner nuts, doubt Runnin Hots r thin LOL :party-smiley-004:

I'm still surprised to hear all the issues guys have had with the nyloc nuts. In my previous post I mentioned changing the nuts often. I guess that's what should be stressed. Top quality maintenance for your top qualityy rig is a must. Put checking the nylocs on your check list. Of course, if guys want to use restaints and glue, absolutely! There's no harm in being over catious.

We currently have a prototype #6 prop lock. It looks the same as you OB and Bravo style lock just bigger. Here is a photo of the current lock.

Coolerman 01-24-2012 10:11 PM

Just another thought, if using a double nut, I don't think you will be able to use an impact to put the props on anymore. I hate using the "block of wood" method.

I'CE 01-26-2012 10:33 PM

come on guys be nice I like a real good time drinks on ! Ya Scott his nuts are drilled
and threaded
then pinned in a diif. fashion it works but,
there is an interferance fit on the prop shaft threads.
and new nylocks are a must do.
