What I can tell you is planning without additional drive additions is the best option. Added units can create drag and deter speed and boat attitude. Best case is correct X dimension and propeller selection as well as CG adjustments and you will reap the best performance results.

It is not a whale tale or aftermarket bolt on garbage. I is an imco upper cav plate extension and it is (in a lot of cases) necessary to plane off with a shorty. The lower cav plate is non existent with a shorty.

Got it. Thought he was talking about the cheap stuff.
When we developed the Shorty Sportmaster at Merc Racing we also created a similar cav plate. We called it a splash plate. It cam standard and was removable as well. And yes, they can definitely help with planning. Just need to be sure your X dimension allows it to be dry when running.
