The flavors of Bravo 1 props
I was told there is a blade difference between Bravo 1 props that are cast with the prefix "Mercruser" or "Mercury marine".
What is the difference? Thanks |
I'm surprised no one has anything to share on this subject.

Wild guess here, there are Bravo's for stern drive applications and different versions of the Bravo prop for outboard applications. Mercruiser is associated with the stern drive product line, Mercury is more associated with the outboard products.

In late1998 we decided to uniform the hubs in the Mercury main line propeller family. Because of this the Bravo 1 square bore was decreased in depth by 1/4" to match the rest of the families. When the change was made, it required you to use a K2 or Q2 solid insert in the Mercury Marine casting. This allowed for the 1/4" step to be usable with the stepped thrust washer. Still to this day we see K1 and Q1 inserts in the Merc castings causing a flush surface on the prop forwad face. This doesn't create full integration with the thrust washer. Slightly loose prop nuts could then create some minor prop wobble. (rarely the case)
We also changed the name to Mercury Marine as we were headed in that direction with that prop being used in many OB applications. It was called Mercruiser originally because the original intent was to be used on the Bravo drive which is obviously attached to Mercruiser engines. The basic geometry of the hub and blades is the same between the 2 castings. . The bigger questions and stories behind the Bravo 1 family would be the differences in the pitch per advertised as well as the diameters. That is another story of which I have written volumes about on this forum. In a nut shell, the 34 and 36 pitch castings are the only true 15.25" castings. The others are smaller. Brett |
