Lessening a porpoise

Twin engine 28' v bottom with speed master III's, which way to spin the props? Which way would lesson the porpoising? What can be done to the props to lesson it?

Craney 03-05-2018 05:28 PM

My 28 Pantera the props are spinning in for now, forgot they are Trs drives with 2" spacers, the new drives no spacers and I'll try spinning them out.Not much propoising with current setup.

3 blade props? What diameter?

bigboat28 03-05-2018 07:01 PM

Craney, I was wondering about spacers helping me some?

Jd, 3 blades 16.5x26

I need some bigger props, I went up almost 300hp a side.

I have also moved everything that I could be too the rear bulkhead as everything was originally mounted on the transom. I am hoping the more weight farther forward will help some too. Also have aluminum headed motors now so that is saving some transom weight too.

What's the propshaft height? I'd switch to a 4 blade or larger diameter 3

bigboat28 03-05-2018 08:25 PM

Prop shafts right around 4" below the hull.

I changed the spelling of the thread title, because it read like you were trying to Teach a Dolphin how to do tricks. :D

It feels like it.

200lbs of lead as far forward and low as you can should help a lot. or a 15 to 25 gallon ballast tank

Tinkerer 03-06-2018 07:23 PM

Adding a little cup to the prop will help keep the prop connected to the water.

bigboat28 03-07-2018 07:57 AM

So which way would be best to spin props? In or out?

Tinkerer 03-07-2018 06:58 PM

spinning then out will give you more transom lift and probably kill any porpoise but it will probably kill a few MPH.
With a Bravo drive it is easy to test all you have to do is swap props and run the shifters backwards.
You can't do that can you - you have to swap transmissions right?

have to swap drives left to right

bigboat28 03-07-2018 07:43 PM

Yes, just drives

Tinkerer 03-07-2018 09:16 PM

At least that is easier than swapping trans.
My 34 Scarab had Bravo drives. I tried just about everything to get better handling and top speed. The boat handled better at slow speeds with the props turning out but it ran bow down.
With the props turning in I gained about two MPH and handled better but slow speed suffered. labbing the props will allow you to run less blades and or higher drives.
With my 26 Daytona I am able to run 4 blade props with a -3 Imco drive and the props are 2 inches above the lowest point on the hull. Labbing the props helped noticeably for the boat to get on plane.
