16.5 x 36 Hering 18 degree

Going with a single SSM V on my 31 IMP CC. Power is a Merc Bulldog 540. No box , or pad...yet. What will it take power wise to swing this prop?.

What prop, there are many

5 blade.

Trying to educate myself on props since buying the V drive . Don't think it's ever been done on a straight bottom v hull non stepped. with a single engine. There are a few with a single VI drive , Phantom has a 34 with a V but it's on a box and that is not a hull to really compare. It's all I really have information wise. The Checkmate with the VI and a 3 blade made and what I assume was a lengthy process of trial /error. A few of the others (Activators)had 4 and 5 blades.

These 2 props are available at a reasonable price. , one is a Mercury and the other is a Hering. Both are the same size 16.5 x 36 18 degree rake .

I figure I can have them dropped down to low 30's if need be ??.. or do I need to be on the search for 17 /17.5 's.

I Don't know propeller dynamics AT ALL..

You can't drop the pitch into the low 30s. I would borrow a prop and find out where you need to be before making a purchase. Doug

Your running A single LH? I’m running a small cat with a #6 1200hp on it and it takes some pretty big power to pull a 36 with 1.34 gears.

What is the drive gearing?....if this is a stock mercury bulldog, this will be way to much prop

open87 05-25-2019 08:26 AM

Drive is a 1.48 gear.

Yes , stock Bulldog . Has 165 hours on it. Going to have Precision Marine tune on dyno.. If there is anything he can do to increase the torque and just keep it all motor I will see . I am not looking to break records , looking have a good cruise speed 50-70 mph.

Any help/advice is appreciated .

Again, I do not understand prop dynamics at all with SSM drives.

I’m thinking you’ll want to be mid 20’s on pitch

Get the motor in the boat. Borrow a prop and go from there. I have found that a pitch and diameter that should not work in theory was the best prop. Testing is key.
