Scarab 30 with surface drives
I am in the process of rebuilding my boat. I had been running 16-3/5"x 26p 4-blade clevers, and it did well, however, I'm upping the power a little and looking to the future about needed props. I have a set of 4-blade 27p, and I have recently picked up some 17"x27p 6-blade clevers. Anybody ever run a set of 6-blades on a surface drive V-hull? I was curious about transom lift and ability to trim. They came off a Cat, and the owner said they were smooth as silk, but that was a Cat. Any thoughts?

I know completely different setup, but I ran standard Hydromotive Q4's on my Panther which are suppose to be a transom lifting props and hated them. The boat bow steered terribly, road like s#it in rough water, and would not carry the bow. The boat took a beating.

How high is the drive? When you say cleaver do you mean a bravo style cleaver, thru hub exhaust type, or a SSM type cleaver?

What I found out with prop testing on my boat was 4 blade props were the fastest but getting on plane was difficult , 5 blade props getting on plane was a lot better and were a little slower top end that the 4 blades but much smother ,6 blades just felt like to much resistance top end . This was not a good apples to apples comparison because the props were not all the same size but it was all I could find that I could borrow .

Mine are Kaama surface drive, similar to an Arneson, in that they are a true surface piercing drive. 3-blades were the "fastest" for top end on mine, but terrible everywhere else. Lost about 1-2 mph on top, but 4-blades were good all around. Still skeptical about the 6-blades. I don't want to lose any more speed, and I'm concerned about so much transom lift that I can't pull the nose up. (its a straight bottom). Thanks for the input, very helpful. If someone has run a 6-blade on an Arneson or Kaama, that could be helpful too! |

he converted trs to kaama. Broad stroke is he scratch built a kaama drive 30 scarab, did a beautiful job, may have some insight for you |
