Stronger Prop Hubs?

I have Bravo -1 props This upcoming season I will be running 500hp engines. Just looking around randomly at different sites etc. and noticed on Teague's site that they mention something about 400hp hubs. This is something I never thought about. Is this something I should be looking into? They make different hp hubs? Also, and I think this is the most important question, how deep does the "up the hp rabbit hole" go? Is there a list somewhere of all of the things you will need to upgrade because of the hp increase? Thanks for your comments and help.

NO

End. Thanks F-2.

Your going to break something in the drive before you break that prop hub.

I don't know why they called it out on their site. Maybe just pointing out that they are standard 1" hub props?

because their in the business to sell parts, Im sure there are plenty of guys running 600 - 800 hp through bravo style solid hubs

I'm guessing you're referring to the plastic replaceable hub. (STD HP)

They then offer the aluminum replaceable hub for higher HP. (400 HP+)

The other possible problem will become the Bravo 1 out drive. Some have claimed you can go 500-550 HP before things brake. (and careful throttle control) The first HP 500 (carb) came with a Bravo 1. After that, the HP engines started coming with the Bravo 1 XR.

Just as a semi-related observation and subsequent question...but my old Baja 208 Islander had the Yamaha Hyrda-Drive ( 454 Chevy coupled to Yamaha's unique hydraulic clutch outdrive) and it used SOLID hub props...there were no rubber inserts. I have seen from time to time similar 'solid hub' props for sale. What is the advantage/disadvantages? I know on the Hydra-Drive the hydraulic clutch protected the outdrive in the even the prop struck something.

Bajaman, That's interesting. Not that I am aware of everything boat related. Far from it but I never heard or seen that Yamaha drive system. I'm assuming you were not running a high hp mill in that 208? Was that drive pre Bravo-1? Was that considered at the time an "Upgrade" from an Alpha?
My observation of the solid hub stuff is probably what you are thinking. No way for a pressed in or drop in hub surviving really high hp and torque?

There's a huge story behind Yamaha's foray into outdrives in the U.S., and how Mercruiser essentially freaked out and sued them and ended their U.S. presence; these outdrives are still very popular in Europe and the U.K., especially with the RIB crowd as they can withstand immense amounts of torque that the diesel powerplants ahead of them produce.
My 208 had the basic 330 hp 454. A couple of pics:

Seeing how it's my thread, I can ask what I want. :D
I guess that was very "charitable" of Mercury to remove them from the US and let them remain overseas? Would you opt for that outdrive, were it available here, over a Bravo 1?
So the Mirage prop show has a solid hub?
On the engine pic I see too many hoses on the exhaust risers. Did it preheat the water for the engine or perhaps closed cooling and the heat exchanger is not in view?

Oh dude...that outdrive was SO smooth. The shifting was the smoothest you can imagine, basically hydrostatic. No clunk, no 'dog clutches'...just a...surge forwards or backwards, like velvet, with a nice little whine. Throw in there's a tilt switch on the gimbal ring that made working on it so nice. Yeah, solid hub like the one shown in the pic below.

The solid hub Mirage props were also used on Mercruiser TRS outdrives.

Keep using the Delrin aka plastic hubs until you have repeated failure issues. I'm about 430hp and have had no issues.
They may save your prop and/or outdrive if you hit something.
