Mirage Plus question
 

I normally run a 26" Bravo prop, 4500/67.5mph on a Baja 220 Sport w330hp 454. Got to try a 27" Mirage Plus. While it was 2mph faster, it wouldn't come out of the hole for crap. Fully trimmed down I could only give it about 2000rpm until the bow finally came down a little and slowly increase to 2500 to get on plane. Any more than that it would break loose. Is that normal for that much pitch on a Mirage Plus to break loose so easily?

You have an AMAZINGLY strong base 7.4 liter engine to pull a 26" prop...congrats on that...usually takes more like 500 hp, so to be able to do it with nearly 200 hp less is...incredible. Not surprised on the dogginess out of the hole with the 27".

Gotta admit, the Sport 220 is kind of a potato chip compared to most of that length. According to a guy who work for Baja back then they were only 3000lbs. Plus they got a very shallow V with only a 14° dead rise. Was the fastest hull/HP they built. Don't ride for ****, but it's fast.
I never thought it'd break loose so easy.

I had a 1992 208 Islander that I bought new, with the very rare Yamaha HydraDrive - 454 cubic inch engine and the best outdrive ever made IMHO - that boat weighted 3,350 and had a 17 degree deadrise and yeah, didn't handle rough water at all, but was a speed demon that surprised many, many people...it would run 68 -69 mph on GPS pushing a labbed Mirage 21 at around 5400 rpm. A 23" Laser II that I had as a spare would only get to 4800 - 4900 rpm and was a total dog out of the hole.

On my 252, it had a Revolution 4 on it when I bought it, a fantastic prop...but I had always had good luck with Mirage/Mirage+ on other boats that I helped set up for friends. So I tried a 21" Mirage+ on the 252 and was severely disappointed. Easily blew out, had nothing like the hole shot of the Revolution 4...just overall was not a good prop for that boat. And gained MAYBE 1 - 2 mph in top speed.
