My 24 outlaw project

I purchased it in Feb or March. It's a 98 and had a 454 mark iv with spun main bearings. The motor was already out. This turned out to be more of a project then I thought. I did not realize the k-planes were installed over the old boat leveler holes with just sealant in them. Then I decided to remove the tank to check the stringers. Stringers and bulheads were good, but I found soft/wet coring. This is where I am now.

Looking good and yes they are always a little bit more of a project than you originally think they are.

Some progress since last year. Ran the motor on a stand, carpet installed, headliner in. Cuddy and cabin walls back in. I'm starting the wiring and rigging now. I have also rebuilt most of the interior over the winter. I will try to post some pics of that also.

I also replaced every nut and bolt on the trailer as well as the bunks, backing plate assembly for the brakes, winch, etc.

LOOKING GOOD!

I know how hard it is to do cabin areas with the deck on the hull. Keep up the good work and let me know if you have any problems locating something.

Looks Great! What are you using to seal the new wood? Was the gelcoat very tough to apply? That is some nice work, it looks brand new. Randy

FBRONCO 08-06-2013 06:45 AM

Thanks. I am using polyester resin on all the new wood. I just rolled the gelcoat on with a roller.

Great work! Looks great! I'm going to do a full re-rig at the end of this season, not looking forward to it but the boat needs it.

Fantastic! You will have a brand new boat. Did you have to get into the transom? I'm surprised that you had to do the cabin, I would not have thought much water would have gotten in up there. Was this a necessity or did you want to reconfigure it? Really nice looking work.

Dan

FBRONCO 08-07-2013 12:11 PM

The cabin was fine except for some wet balsa in the deck from where the hatches were not sealed. I just wanted to replace the green carpet. The transom was in good shape. I just fixed up the bulkheads, some of the floor and the boxes in the back. Oh and I had some wet coring as well.

Crossett 08-21-2013 09:13 AM

Wow, that looks great!

c_deezy 08-21-2013 03:46 PM

Did you mount the k-plane pumps parallel with the transom angle or put a piece of angle behind them to shim them back to level? I have mine parallel and two of the three seem to leak because the oil level is higher in the rear of the tank than the front. Once they got below the seal they weren't as bad but still do when the boat bounces around.

If you can, I would shim the tops out so they are level, and not parallel with the transom.

I did not shim them. I did not have any issues with my last 24 outlaw when I mounted them that way, but maybe I just didn't get to use it enough. Shouldn't the o-ring seal it from leaking?

Almost done. Got the motor in (That's my Dad and my friend helping me), outdrive on, back seat installed, side panels fitted, dash wiring cleaned up, new trim gauge and depth finder. I had it in the water to start it up, set the timing and make sure it shifts good. I still have not taken it out and got it up on plan. Hopefully this weekend.

Anyone know where the horn is on these boats? I have not tried to follow the wire for that yet. It's not working.

jiffy292 09-29-2013 06:31 PM

How's that motor sound with the dry tails. Or are they semi dry.?

FBRONCO 09-29-2013 08:29 PM

Gavin,
It sounded good until I took it out for it's first ride last weekend. Oil pressure shot up and then at idle it went down close to zero. This was within the first 10 minutes of use. Pulled the motor and one main cap. Bearings and crank are grooved. It needs a rebuild. You can see my posts in the general tech section. This defeats the whole reason I bought the motor. You said this was an 8 hr motor. I assumed you replaced a bad one with this one. When I started it on my stand with your oil cooler, the cooler leaked water. Is this oil cooler the same one used on the previous motor? Oil coolers should not be reused.

dougzdog 04-01-2014 11:16 AM

Boat looks great. I had the same one, but I was fortunate enough to have red rugs. How did you deal with the wet coring?

FBRONCO 04-01-2014 02:23 PM

Thanks. I cut out the wet coring, then I wet bedded new coring in and fiberglassed over the top multiple layers. I did one large piece of fiberglass that went from 3/4 up one stringer all the way down and up 3/4 of the other stringer to tie it all in nice. and another center piece. It's probably a lot stronger now then when it was originally built.

Hopefully my final update on the boat. I finally got it out for it's 2nd maiden voyage over memorial day weekend after I had the motor rebuilt at the end of last year. The hose clamp on the hose from the raw water pump to the oil cooler broke, so the water temp shot up and water was spilling into my bilge within the first 10 mins. But good thing I was watching the gauges like a hawk. I was able to push the hose back on and idle back in. Put a new clamp on and it ran really well. I had it up to 62 mph at 4700 rpms for a very short burst. Too much debris in the water. I took it out for a decent cruise the following day with no issues. I have since changed out the thermostat to a 140 degree. I'm hoping for a good summer with limited issues... fingers crossed.

Borgie 06-03-2014 11:27 PM

Excellent job! These projects are a labor of love, but when it's hot out, no place I think we'd all rather be then out on the lake! Good to see you have her ready just in time. Enjoy!
