1997 formula fastech 353 is will twin sbc work??

I found a this boat on a great deal has no power at all no drives on nothing but boat is good shape. I my buddy will give me a pair of stroker sbc 383 and alpha drives, will this push this big boat ??? He'd had this set up on a 97 scarab 29 ft and it ran pretty strong

Should work fine just remember that boat is only 33' long. And it wont be fast but you will have some fun with it there are nice boats.

Rattlesnake Jake 01-22-2015 05:28 PM

I don't like the idea of the alpha drives at all.

jeff32 01-22-2015 05:49 PM

Alpha should come with 2 paddle! This is not gonna work long at all!!!!

cig92 01-22-2015 07:46 PM

put some standard bravos on the back, no go on the alpha imo

t500hps 01-22-2015 07:55 PM

In a 353 Formula, 383s with bravos will be a 60 mph boat. 383s with alphas will be a sailboat.....cause pretty soon the only place your going is where the wind takes you.

gulfcoast25 01-22-2015 09:49 PM

You think it will go 55+ mph

gulfcoast25 01-22-2015 09:52 PM

My last boat was a 29 ft scarab with 350 mpi factory and alpha drives and they never let me down be I think in going look for some bravos thanks !!

endeavour32 01-22-2015 10:16 PM

Why don't you look for a nice pair of take out 454's. Don't waste your time with alpha's they will never last, plus if the boat still has gimbals on it, they will not bolt up. IMO, 383's in a 353 is a very bad decision, this is not a 29 scarab, its a 353 formula, totally different boats. If your buddy is "giving" you the engines what were they built for? I just can't imagine this working well at all......

Know a guy with one , gets 55 , orig alpha 1 gen 1 drives ,260 hp sb mags think the reduced drag of alphas offsetsalot of the missing 100 hp of 2 base 454s . Never going to be the holeshot king , but you can almost buy a spare alpha 1 g1 for the price of taking your girl out for dinner .but if you ever want to go big , ill bet whatever you paid for the hull and free motors , just doubled .

gulfcoast25 01-23-2015 03:32 PM

I got the boat from a guy who got serval estimates for over 30k to re power the boat. It's has no gimbal no out drives no nothing the boat was a theft recovery. Would it be too hard to go triples sbc. The only reason I want the sbc because the motors are complete marine engines (trading a street bike for the engines ). So if I can built one engine and find 3 bravo 1 ??????

jeff32 01-23-2015 03:47 PM

first, no one wants small block in a boat this size

second, no one wants triple engines anymore, even if they are small blocks.

so if you go twin small block, you get market value minus quite a lot on resale.

if you go triple small blocks, you get market value minus.... Can't figure out... bare hull value is what you are gonna get back...

sell the small blocks and buy BBC, the boat needs BBC balance and TQ, don;t destroy a good hull and waste it....

I would put a pair of 8.3L whipples on those 383's and 6 blade herrings. The alphas should hold up fine, just run that neo oil in them and a drive shower.

Lol

I say buy it put those motors in it and go boating & put a smile on your face. Figure out what you think you need/want for the next year and start stock piling your parts. Do it and report back, what the heck is it going to hurt?

You can't fit a midget in the bilge to winterize a bbc 353, no way you'd ever put triple sbc's in it without cutting up the cockpit. Sell your street bike, buy a pair of 454 mags and bravos.

My buddy's 300lbs does everything in his 353 no problem, I tell him he looks like a wedged sausage though! E

I think the engines will surprise many with how well they will perform in that boat...you need 280 K Planes to launch it though.

As for the Alphas...DON"T DO IT. Strong power and Alpha reliability is marginal in a light boat...but in a heavy boat...make sure your Sea Tow Policy is active...because you WILL be using it!!

It's not that hard to upgrade to Bravo 1's...find a solid pair...even good take offs and re-build them. Your transom is already drilled for Bravo Gimbals.

Stout 383's are making 450 # ft of torque and that's close to base 502 power...not to mention what saving 300# in the stern will do for that boat. You'll end up with a rig that you can enjoy on the cheap for several seasons...then maybe consider upgrading to the latest LS technology available a few years from now.

Sell the Alphas, add the extra $$$ to shop/buy the Bravos and make them part of the project...you'll be glad you did.

Check out my thread on the restoration of my 79 Formula 255 Liberator to see how I set mine up.

Good luck and keep us posted.
