88 Pachanga 32
I recently picked up an 88 Pachanga 32 that needed a new starboard motor. New motor is almost out of the machine shop, just need to get cam and lifters for it. Now the bad part...
I missed a bunch of rot under the cockpit when i was looking at it and now have to decide whether or not to fix it or part it out. Has anyone had any experience on these taking the fuel tanks out and redoing the stringers and bulkheads? |
Took the seats out tonight and got the fuel tank access panel up. Gonna have to get a couple fuel drums to drain the tank so I can get it out. The floor supports are ok but all the bulkheads and I'm assuming the stringers are shot. Won't know until I get the tank out.

It's a labor of love, but will be worth it when it's done.
Congrats!! Any pictures?? |

Congrats! It looks the Pachanga I drove by many times here in Portsmouth, never seen a for sale sign on it.
|
Yeah that's the one...it was on craigslist. He bought it in St Petersburg fl. He was on his way to the PPP last summer and the starboard motor threw a rod.
|
Looks good!!
Just an FYI, if you copy the bottom "share" link the actual picture will show in your post. |

One advantage to fixing it is you know what you have. Part it out but another and could be in same spot.

I had one years back, 550+ hours and had a great time with the boat. If you do follow thru and fix it all up you will not be disappointed with the boat when done. God luck!
|
Got into it a little more last night.
http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...ps606d4cdf.jpg http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...psef813045.jpg I picked up 2 55 gallon drums so I can drain the tank and get it out this weekend. |

Cut the bottom off the tank access cover and found out why it was so soft. The front part is still solid so just have to repair the back section . Drained almost 100 gallons of fuel out so should have the tank out tonight or tomorrow. |
how is the exhaust blocked off in the corners?
|
The previous owner fiber glassed in some plugs into the exhaust ports. I want to totally fill them in at some point.
|
I remember that boat being on CL. Seen it out and about a couple times, too. Definitely fix her up!
I've got a guy that can probably help you with all that pretty reasonably. He did my Formula. Great work. Send me a PM if you want his info. |
I'm workin on it...got the tank out and starting to dig out the rotten stuff. If I get to a spot where I'm gonna have someone else do it I will get that name from you. Where do you usually take your formula out at?
|
So the more I dig the more I find...what a dumb design by not having a drain back to the rear bilge. The wall between the engine bay and the fuel tank is rotten. Then all the little bulkheads forward of the tank are rotten too. I think those are gonna be the toughest to fix. I was hoping to not have to pull all the foam out but looks like I will have to. I gotta get some cutoff wheels and grinding discs tomorrow.
|
There's some threads on transom removal. They list tools needed to do the job.
Keep up the good work! |
Thanks
Luckily my transom is ok....this is just the bulkhead between the engine bay and the fuel tank which is under the cockpit deck. I'll look up the threads though as some tips may help. |
I say fix it. My bulkhead in my scarab rotted due to water running off the top of the tank and sitting against the tank and bulkhead. Like was posted earlier, if you fix it you know it's done right.
|
Was able to fit it in the garage.
http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0f9fc569.jpg did some more digging ...doesn't seem to be an end to the mush. http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...ps988f368e.jpg http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...psfaf789e3.jpg stringers are wet but not rotten...Still have some more foam to get out. Not sure how I'm gonna get it back together with the floor on but we'll see. |
On a brighter note....I got a call today from the machine shop that the long block and heads are ready to go so I will pick them up early next week. Still need to order a cam and some new arp head bolts.
|
|
Great looking boat! I'm subscribed and looking forward to seeing a great finished product.
|
what pistons are those?
|
Thanks...whole lot more of a project than I planned on...just got some marine grade plywood and am ordering some fiberglass off amazon. Need to find a reasonable source for resin.
The pistons are forged srp's...it is a complete forged eagle kit. It's been balanced and is just missing the cam and headbolts for putting the heads on. The kit was real nice and didn't take much to balance out. |
