The return of the "Schiada Sea's"

Hello all ! Looking for some input.

I have this old friend. She is a 1990 30' Schiada. Started with SBC and Alpha SS's. Ran as "Schiada Sea's B85 and B35.
With the 357 SBC it had about 1200 hp.at 6500 +-. Best top end was 102 - 104 mph and then I blew a motor.

During her time racing its been 2 front 1 back,3 side by side, and a full F16 canopy boat. I removed the canopy (she felt like a video game) and it is just a clean canvas looking for what next .

She has been in storage since 2001. I think its time for a new start .

Thinking about going to a outboard bracket and maybe 2, 275 Verado's and doing a center console.The hull is about 3000lbs +- and a fast V .

Budget will be $20,000 +- with free labor. Thinking used for motors, new for bracket.Have alot of older stuff to help .

So, what do you think about the idea?

Randy

Man, I remember that one! Loved the staggered small blocks! I get the outboards, but I'd go small blocks bravos.

B85 08-22-2015 09:35 AM

The motor were fun,but I'm slowing down now.

Here is a blast from the past .

Thanks, Randy

Thanks, Randy

I remember that one too.
No limits cougar, now 32 Speedster

Did you have custom Y pipes on those small blocks, any engine and drive pics when it was together?
Also, did you buy it new from Schiada in 1990?

Crazy enough your boat was one of my favorites, never saw one like it.
Not to many 30 schiadas. Uilt

Sorry , meant not many built

B85 08-22-2015 01:22 PM

Yep, we did all the exhaust work on our Dyno. Lots of hours in finding the right "Y".

She is # 2 out of the new mold. Mr. Spindlier Sr. got the first one.

Well sorry for all the questions, but that 30 is really interesting to me. I remember the old 30 that was built in the late 70s early 80s....didn't know there was a newer mold. I did see one other newer 30, I think it was white w purple stripes....maybe that was his. Wonder if he still has mold.....probably does but I haven't seen many out there. That's amazing it ran that fast w 600 small blocks and alpha ss

Randy, that is a very nice race boat. I converted my 35' Cigarette into a 28' center console with a single 250 3.0L V-6 EFI Merc outboard. I also added real teak floors. I am land locked so twins just did not seem worth it. There is a older thread about it in the Cigarette forum, "Conversion of a 35' to a 28' CC" or something similar. It has been a fun project despite people's reservations about my sanity. Bob N.

B85 08-22-2015 08:02 PM

Thanks Bob ! Well done on the boat. Love the floor.

B85 08-23-2015 01:46 PM

Here is a photo when new and a poor shot of the exhausr being tested on the dyno.

Also been looking at some photos and am getting the feeling I will stay with the Small blocks. Its the fuel tanks. To go O/B I would need to build all new ones and that is not in the budget !

Time to start looking for a new block ? LOL

There you go! You ran 600 hp small blocks on staggered alpha ss drives! That is awesome. Great pics, let's see those staggered drives. Cool boat!

B85 08-23-2015 06:12 PM

Were in Glendale,AZ.

Here is a shot with one motor out and very dirty. Can't seem to find motor room photos. Will keep looking.

Man those Y pipes are so cool. Did you weld those yourself? The Y was a piece you bought and fabbed the rest? Is it true by using the 2 into 1 pipe it creates more torque? Great pics!

no limits 08-23-2015 07:56 PM

Also does the water and exhaust mix at the Y or are they dry all the way out (double wall)

B85 08-23-2015 08:03 PM

Yes, about 15 F/lbs. at 5200

Here is a shot with the tall first pipe. When we cut it down to go under the new canopy deck we found another 2 F/lbs. Funny how shorter first pipe helped.

B85 08-23-2015 08:07 PM

Dry all the way to the end and has a lower outlet just over the drive. May also help keep the drive cooler or warmer ? Water should be around 140 Deg. + - ?

no limits 08-24-2015 07:14 AM

I like it, looks cool too. Were alphas ever counter rotating drives

B85 08-24-2015 08:45 AM

When I started with the SS's , their were no counters. Also using a 20" stager the drives almost pull like a very big single. With the external steering their is no pull at the wheel. She is a great flyer !

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/h...psie3hmqde.jpg

Very big jump.

You must be a great throttle man, hard to believe the alpha SS would hold up under 600 hp per side....I have seen 400 hp small blocks on a old A class boat called Kens Oil which was a great runner in the Great Lakes region. Well, they must be pretty tough and I guess the bravo took over so they quit with the alpha SS.
I got to say I got a new Old school B class favorite, YOURS!
Great pics

B85 08-24-2015 01:29 PM

Thanks !

She is a great boat and getting the power into the water is the trick. In my time with the SS's the trick is getting over 3500 rpm. The TQ is what will "KILL" the drive. But that is true for all drives.I have found NO fast starts. But the SS is way beyond her limit with this power, I was just lucky or good ?

The speed was the RPM at wot, 7200. Went through a lot of springs. But the little drive seamed ok with that.

no limits 08-24-2015 03:22 PM

I would love to see what the drives look like on the transom w the Y pipes out the back. I found an old powerboat magazine when your boat had blue stripes....it has the 4 exhaust out the back. I got to say of all the looks I've seen of the boat, canopy front/back, triple bolster and the 2 plus 1 seat in back, I like the shot you posted of the boat getting air, I like the triple the best with the newer purple, turquoise, Checker paint.
Pretty unique....and cool!

B85 08-24-2015 04:33 PM

Thanks again !

I will keep looking for other photos.

How's the Schiada coming?
Any progress?

B85 11-12-2015 07:53 PM

Sorry, no up dates. Still trying to work out the "Do I need to do this" thing ?

Also had a guy call and would like to buy the drives ? Don't think I want to reinvent the wheel again with some kind of short Bravo, but ?

I got a little distracted with my rally car also.

Randy

B85 05-24-2017 09:34 PM

Found a photo of the exhaust .

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/h...psv5k7xw2r.jpg

This is when it was 3 side by side.

Now back thinking about doing the re-build ?

NHGuy 06-07-2017 04:30 AM

So awesome. Gives me hope that if I baby the stick on my 383 Alpha that the drive can live.

B85 06-18-2017 05:53 PM

Just no drag racing ! But you should be ok. Water the drive (shower),change the oil .

Think I would pull the drive down and check the shimming every year.
Also keep a eye on the propshaft carrier bearing. The end one ( needle Bearing ! )

My driver were done every race. That's 6 to 8 times a year.
Maybe a good rule of thumb would be to do it at 30 to 40 hours?

We (Mercury) used the drive on the 330 big block for maybe 1 1/2 to 2 year ? Just before the Bravo came on line.
Drive would last about 30 hours and explode !

B85 06-26-2017 11:39 PM

Been thinking about the new deck. Anybody use NidaCore panels ? I don't want to build a mold for a one-off.

B85 10-28-2017 06:58 PM

Moved forward a little. Pulled her in the bay and started pulling some of the stuff.

Why did I pull the old deck ???
Because the boat turned into a Video Game. How my head will be back into the wind. LOL

B85 10-28-2017 07:15 PM

Also sorry about the "PhotoBucket" I hate them !

If their are other photos anyone needs I will report !

B85 10-29-2017 04:26 PM

A little cleaning. Not that it needed it.

And sitting in the sun drying out or getting a tan ? LOL

Been thinking about the new deck. Here is one new idea. 2 side-by-side and a rear bench ? This would be a sit down racing seats on suspension.

Or something other than this ? Ideas.
