Re-powering 06 35' Outlaw
I have a 2006 35' Baja Outlaw with port out-drive Upper failure ("X" drive's) twin 496HO with 320ish hours on engines. I thought now would be a great time to re-power the boat with more horsepower. Would like to know if anybody has a suggestion or can comment on best approach. Checked out Bullet Marine in Canada and they seem pretty reasonable. They will do the works, take drives in and repair, take my motors in on trade, and re-rig the new motors. Would like to trade in my 496 HO for something larger. Being told that I need bigger drives, I'm not sure what I need. I just would like to bundle my out-dive problem with new bigger motors.

35 Outlaw 2009 with 525 EFI and XR without boxes is advertised for sale and says it runs 75 mph. Are you looking for a certain top speed? If your looking for 85 to 90 mph, given the power in the 09 for sale, it is going to take substantial hp and investment with that hull to get there. Does re-sale concern you? If not, go for it. If so, buy a boat that goes the speed you want from the start meanwhile repair your current boat and market it.

Was looking to get 90+. I have been told that this boat cannot break 100 due to the hull design not having any steps. If I could get a solid high's 80's I would be happy I think. Just looking for a recommened marine shop that would handle such a task.

I've been down this road.............take your money and buy a 90+ boat. With what you'll spend on the Baja making it go 90 you'll have some left over for fuel.

Yes, me too! With my second boat a 272 Baja. The one thing I learned was it's going to cost twice as much as you thought to go half as fast as you planned.

Not true......friend of mine went 103 in the shoot out with whippled 525's in a 35 OL..............you can get your number just depends on if you want to mortgage the house to do it...:D

On some boats, enough power is needed to get the entire hull out of the water so it is no longer a detriment to speed. More advanced and faster hulls are designed to help you do the same by lifting themselves out of the water. |

Yeah, in 2017 Chad Prater made a 117-mph pass in a 35 Outlaw. One of, if not the nicest, 35 Outlaw out there.

So you thinking that with 565ci 650 Hp Using the "X" drives will push me in the 90+ range?

I like the idea but a repower is way more than bolting in different motors. Rigging, plumbing, drives, steering if it’s not already hydraulic... oh oh and how could I forget.... finding that perfect x dimension to obtain said speeds Having said that some #6s on the back would be siiiiiiiiiiiiick |
I would NOT recommend bullet motors. Too many horror stories of motors slapped together with mismatched parts, used etc.
You must be in Canada, so I would look at Marine Extreme in Montreal, they deal in go fast boats. Or for more intimate motor builder, AKracing in lake simcoe. |
Great boat that will be a blast at 90+ but you really need to break 100 to be happy, which is fine but you think your drive issues are a problem now it's know going to get worse, everything about going fast gets worse, breaks more, and requires more maintenance, whatever you are thinking in your head just triple it. And everything takes longer than you expect it too.
Normally it's always better to buy a boat that already does what to want. Personally I love the 35 outlaw so if you really think you want to dump about 100k+ into your boat than sweet let us help you spend your money! |
I have heard mixed reviews about Bullet. What will you do if there is an issue and your builder is 1000+ miles away in another country??
The 700/NXT 35 OL's will touch a 100mph. Chad's engines are a lot more than standard Whippled 525's. |
You're only 150 miles from one of the best shops in the country, Young Performance in Nashville Tn!
