Well. I stayed up late Saturday night after I got all my stringer pieces cut and fit. I was so excited to get my buckets of epoxy resin and hardener out and throw a coat on all the pieces. Long story short I think my resin is shot. I had it in the bathroom in the barn all winter right next to the heater and I’m not sure if it got moisture in it or if the bucket wasn’t completely sealed and got grinding dust in it or what. It’s a very white thick pancake batter kind of thickness. Wasn’t like that when I got it. So instead of coating all the pieces I figured I would do a couple test pieces and I’m sure glad I did. First mixture I made up was just what I was told to do. 2 to 1 by weight resin to hardener. From Saturday night at 2am to Sunday night at 10pm it never got hard. I fed the batch a blue pill and threw some more hardener at it just to see what it would do. It didn’t lay on nice, still had brush marks, and did eventually get hard. I’m not going to use it. Not worth it. So this coming weekend hopefully I can get a new pal or epoxy and seal the pieces.

Had some scrap ply laying around I punched some staples through so I can set the wet pieces on but they won’t stick to the board

Did you test fit the engines with the Arnesons before cutting the transom? You may need to cut the stringers to get the motor low enough to be parallel with the drive line and have a respectable drive shaft angle.

Yes and no. I had the motors in and know where the center of the output yoke for the drive shaft was. I also had the Arnesons mocked up very close to where they will end up. I think I will be very close to where it needs to be but if I need to trim the pieces after I glass the stringers I’m not too scared to do so.

Looks like your resin got cold over the winter. Put the container in a pan of hot water. The resin should warm up and the crystalline structure should re-dissolve into the original clear state. Have had this happen a few times, and the resin is good as new when warmed.

Interesting. How “hot” is “hot water”? After you warm it up does it become clear and stay clear and it’s good to go from then on or is this a every time before you use it type of situation?

I may give that a whirl, but at the same time I’ve got some much of my time into this project I just want it to be 110% right and just get some new resin.

Point to consider - How fast do you plan on running your boat, pushing how much HP, with your family and friends in a boat that was reconstructed at the most critical points with a questionable resin that you may be able to resurrect? IF the resin is changing in a physical state - the chemical has as well ( as you have already witnessed)

This is strictly MHO, but spend the money on new resin and don't regret the $$$$. If there is an issue down the road and, god forbid, someone got hurt because of questionable materials.....well, you can paint the picture from there because this thread will turn up quickly.

I couldn’t agree more. That point trumps the thought of just the time and effort put into the project being a waste.

Hopefully I will be able to swing through Skater soon and get another bucket... I’ll find something fun to do with this bucket.

You can start with boiling water as it will cool quickly. You only have to do it once. I have been using West System for 32, ouch, years and have had this happen a dozen times due to my cold winters. I have never seen any degradation of the resin in use.

I’ll have to give it a try and use it to make some bag boards or something. Thanks for the info I will let ya know how it pans out
