502 upgrade

Which way would you go. I have two newer 502 mag mpi's. I'm either going to pull them and sell them complete or build them. What the best bang for the buck? Build these or sell and put new drop ins. Think about going to twin 540s carb motors.

I can tell you that there is no comparison between the two as far as performance goes. So if you are looking for a drastic performance difference, carbed 540’s are the way to go. I would sell the 502’s complete and build the new power from scratch. It won’t be cheap to do things right but selling the old motors and drives will offset some of the pain. I gained over 15 mph in a usually overloaded family boat and my build is very conservative (wet exhaust) single engine.Good luck

The only thing reusable are the blocks, IMO there worth about 10-13k for the pair and you will blow through that in an instant building a pair of 540's, so ya betta have a bunch of cash to finish them.

I figured if i sell them both it covers the one motor. The other is out of my pocket.

What are your HP goals? Ateco might be worth a call. They will take your 502 mpi and turn it into a 540 , 595 HP MPI for as they advertise for about 13k (plus headers)

I was thinking about putting two of these in and selling my 502s. These seem to be a better deal than a rebuild for 12k each. Thoughts ?

Interesting. I look at the Blueprint stuff all the time and wonder how robust it is.

I always wonder about blueprint engines when I see their product at summit. Seems pretty economical for what it is. Does anybody have any knowledge about these? It says a new Blueprint block, do they outsource it from a known company or are they "overseas" castings ?

I have no personal experience but read a HotRod magazine article that they were super impressed with the product and quality control. At least worth a look into it.

The block is from overseas. Have no experience or reports from it. Maybe a Google search ?

A kid in the local fb car club bought a blueprint 468 for his camaro. Now, I had NOTHING to do with it other than doing his transmission. He ate the ends of pushrods off on guideplates because they used cheap, chinese guideplates that werent deep enough (He didnt know why). Instead of fixing it, he sent it back, it did it again. I went over the second time and took a look, i told him the pushrod was clearly binding and not seated in the hole in rocker arm, amateur mistake IMO. He called them back a third time, they told him the only way to fix his problem was to upgrade to aluminum heads, I had to laugh, how about making sure everything has CLEARANCE!

I spent 15 with machine work for top quality everything. It’s not worth it to try and skimp. Your going to get bit in the ass.

How many hours and what are you going to ask for them?
