Scarab excel 31 new transom and OB conversion
Started this thread in the scarab section but not allot of traffic so moving it here. I am sure I will need advice and input at times.
Bought this boat on the cheap a little over a year ago. Had a great year with it including taking her to the Bahamas. I knew the transom was going to need love after the summer. Well late summer we got a nasty thunderstorm and my boat lift and the boat took a lightning strike... Both engines have been a complete headache since. Overheating issues sticking valves both impellers where melted after the strike. Was looking at just getting the motors rebuilt and doing the transom but I decided to change things up. IB to OB choice was simple. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade and fix stuff all week and simply want to head to the island and drink beer on the weekend not work on my boat endlessly. In Florida we don't have a winter season to work on our boats. Also have an HOA so only get limited time to have the boat in the driveway. I am going to miss the sweet sound of the bigblocks but everything else I will not miss. With the verados I will get much better fuel mileage, reliability, speed, control, room and the list goes on and on. First up was getting the motors out drives and all the other IB stuff. The new verados will have fly by wire steering and throttles so everything will be removed. Will be doing all new wiring switch panel and circuit breaker panel. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...48b19a1447.jpg

Right now I am in the middle of removing the rotten transom. Whole body itches lots of fun. I am doing the tear out on the transom but I have a glass guy installing the new coosa transom for me along with the reinforcing transom and stringers for the outboards.
The swim platform really surprised me how heavy it was. The plan is to go with a bracket and triple mercury verado 300s. I found a triple set I'm going to go see next week. Hopefully they work out and ill pick them up. So even with the trip 300s this will be a lighter setup then the bravo big blocks. Problem is it further behind so it will move the CG back some. This boat no matter how much I trimmed it up seemed to not lift the bow much so I am not thinking this should be an issue.

I would be very careful about using coosa on the transom with the outboard hanging back there I would use marine grade ply much stronger on the clamping surface. I have not had much luck with coosa transoms the crush to much for my comfort and make sure you run your knee braces all the way to the top of the transom. Just my two cents Regards Dan

Dan thanks! I also was thinking ply would be better. The builder is the one that wants to use the composite board. He was the production manager I think for statement boats and knows his stuff. My decision to use him is because of the boats I’ve seen him build from molds. Top notch work. when I last talked to him though I was going to use twins. With the trips he might want ply now. He has another old scarab in the shop now doing a twin outboard conversion. I will see how his comes out. |

With trip 300s it should be about 340lbs lighter then the big blocks. The engine bracket I'm thinking will be lighter then the swim platform it had before. That thing weighed a ton. The engine bracket will also have flotation so that will help with the weight being so far back. I will try to stop by the glass shop to get pics when he is working on it. The guy I'm getting the engines from is not ready yet to remove them from his boat. So will need to wait until about January or so for the engines. |
