Engine Pricing
Hello,
I picked up an Eliminator Daytona last year and had issues with the engine right away (junk procomp heads). I sent the engine to one of the big name builders. The build took over a full year to complete. My tally with everything I agreed to was 27.5k plus nickle and dime stuff to finish the dress. The invoice came in at 37k. The build reused my block and crank. everything else is new. new heads and new intake / EFI / ECU. NA 530 CU" motor making 640hp with 660 ft lbs. Besides the 30% jump at the last minute, is 37k reasonable across the industry for an essentially new drop in engine in this power range? This is one of the "big name" builders not a mom and pop shop. Thanks for reading. |
Dang that would tick me off, 10K at last minute

Without knowing the parts that were used its difficult to tell, you can buy a nice set of rods for 800 bucks or spend 1600, have they explained the 10K increase ?..........37k seems expensive to me
|
That sounds a little steep to me. For that price you could have went with a whipple setup on that motor and had way more power. I'd definitely be fining out what the reasoning for 10k mark up.

All new engine accessories or re-using a bunch of yours? Sea water pump, oil cooler, brackets, pulleys, fuel system upgrades... Hard to tell without knowing what all you purchased. Long block plus intake and injectors, ignition system and computer that sounds kinda high for the HP you got.
|
$37K. And you want us to tell you whether that amount of money is reasonable or not?
What does your invoice say that you agreed to? Who's this big Builders name? Teague 825 hp I was told was going for $60K a while ago. Not sure of their cost now. That was with new parts from the oil pan to the super charger. So, was it worth the money? |
Just for reference, I built 2 548 700hp engines for a customer a couple of years ago for around that price. Only reused his blocks. New rotating assemblies, heads and Holley fuel injection, dyno'd and installed in boat. BUT, I am not a big name engine builder.

Agree with everything you had to say especially this one. Without knowing the builder, how are we to second guess. What I mean by that is he "big name" as in the OP knows about him. Or is it some revered builder, where if named everyone on this site will chime in maybe say he's worth it or whatnot or not. Got an itemized invoice? Post a copy of it. Many here will dissect it and let ya know where if at all ya got burnt. |

These threads with no name. It's like hey I got crappy food and service, but won't let ya know where. What's the point?

I guess the point was to get ball park pricing on what people have paid for set ups from shops like Teague, tylercrockett, KE, Zul, pfaff… well known race shops. The part about my engine was more to highlight why I am asking.
Thanks for the swift replies so far! =) We just don't know what all you got aside from your power numbers. As said in here there's many grades of components and people that put them together. |
