Re: 38 Scarab (mike J Can You Help?)

I have recently acquired a 1989 38’ Kevlar Scarab excel ex Drambuie boat originally powered by 2x650 hp gentry turbo engines.
Does anyone know the difference between the excel model and the thunder model?
The boat is currently being rigged with a single 1600 hp turbine with power being split to two arneson surface drives.
Does the scarab excel make a good boat? As It seems to have only be made for a short period of time.

Re: 38 Scarab (mike J Can You Help?)

First let me know the hull I.D. Number of the Boat
ALL the Drambuie Boats were Contracted to a person
by the name of Eddie Moranz he was conected with Scarab
for a few years and them started building custom boats.
There were 3 Drambuie Boats that I know of.
2 38ft and 1 50ft, The 50ft met a odd end when it was runover by a train when they HiCentered it on the tracks behind TNT in the Miami Area.
The construction of the 50' was from a Scarab mold and. But im not sure about your 38.
Eddie Moranz died a few years back.
I have a lot of photos and some great Video of the 39ft and 50ft running side by side here in the Ocean in SoCal.
Email me and I will send any info I have.
Thanks Mike J.

Mike
The hull ID is WELP47300889 38S the ID is hard to read so I hope this looks OK.
The boat is defiantly made from Kevlar but the hull ID shows it was made by wellcraft and not the Larry Smith factory

I spoke to a guy in Scotland who owns a 1986 46 flat deck scarab he recons his boat also belonged to Drambuie it is powered by a pair of CAT 3126 on SSMVI drives he told me that he bought this boat from Drambuie early this year.

Sorry but I really never worked at Wellcraft...
I was there a number of times to work on boats built on the west coast.

The Brothers who own Drambuie were here in the Huntingtn Beach area alot and sent casses of their product every Christmas.
I beleive the boat that is in Scotland is a RED 38 with the twin Gentrys.

Hi Guys.

I just stumbled across this old thread so thought I'd sign up and send some info. Don't know if you'll get as so much time has passed.

Scarab 38 - The Gentry boat owned by Drambuie was great. I've got a photo of it hanging on my office wall from when my father and I set the River Clyde speed record in it. I think that was '89. We were the Wellcraft dealer for the UK back then.

Scarab 46 - The boat in Scotland, which is now for sale or may have been sold, is / was owned by a guy I know and it was the Drambuie boat that was meant to attempt the round Britain record but it never did. They sent a 50 round some years later.

Drambuie Scarabs: 1 x 31 with custom hardtop, 1 x 38 with Gentry power, 1 x 38 with Merc power, 1 x 46 with twin Cat 3208TA's and 1 x 50 with four Cat's.

Mike J, you mentioned that you had some footage of two of the boats running together in SoCal. Do you still have it?

Re: 38 Scarab (mike J Can You Help?)

Yep that's the 38' boat I have it sitting in my garage currently getting painted, my original idea was to convert it into a turbine powered boat.
Since then I have acquired a 36 cat which I am using as my turbine project the Scarab my be up for sale soon.
DO you know what drives it was fitted with then? when I bought the boat it had a pair of SSM iv with extension boxes.

Well it's been a while but I think she had SSM III's. I'll check with my father when I talk to him next. Let me if I can be of any more help.

Re: 38 Scarab (mike J Can You Help?)

Mike can you get the history on any of the older larry smith boats?

I also have an 89 kv and would like some more info on how it was orriginally rigged as the combo in the boat when I bought it was quite unusual.

Let me know
Thanks Paul
