Scarab 26 Hull Origin
I have a 1997 Scarab 26 and I am curious about where the 1996-1998 26 hull was derived from. Just wondering if it was an original design for the boat or was it an old design. I know there are alot of Wellcraft and Scarab experts out there.

Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
Your right Theres a lot of EXPERTS.
All I can tell you is the bottom has steps, The top is the old corvette deck that was in storage at Wellcraft and was just getting ready to be cut up. The boats were built at Team Scarab in SoCal and were rigged at Wellcraft in FL. I was there at team scarab. Mike J. |
Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
Thanks Mike but I am referring to the regular non step 26 Scarab not the F1 boats. I wish mine was one of the few F1 26s!!!!

Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
OK is it a Team Scarab Flat Deck? I own the 4th one out of the mold.
The original mold is still in SoCal but there were one or two molds that were at Wellcraft. I never worked at wellcraft. Mike J. |
Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
How many years were the 26 flat deck boats built?
Sorry to chime in, I have been looking for a 23SCS or 26 Scarab. Just saw a 26 Flat Deck in Poker Run Mag. Looks Good! Thanks, Speed |
Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
Mike I have a Wellcraft Scarab 26 not a Team Scarab boat. The model built from 1996 model year to 1998 model year. Just wondering if it is similar to the older 26 Wellcraft Scarab or if it was a new hull for them. By the way Mike it is interesting reading your posts about your days at Team Scarab. Im sorry I should have mentioned in the first post which one I had.

Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
The First 26ft boat built was a classic flat deck built in 1985 for Tom Gentry and is in storage in Hawaii.
1 boat built in 1986 2 boats built in 1987 2 boats built in 1988 (Mine) and another. 2 boats built in 1990 1 went to Guam, 1 to Swedan "European A Class" Then Nigel Hooks World Champion "A" Boat and 3 other NonStep "A" Boats. The mold was reworked and the F! step bottom boats were built, Bob Christies and 5 others. The mold is in storage as far as I know. Mike J. |
Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
tjscarab, I bought one of the first 96's that they made. When I talked to the (then) V.P. of Welcraft they bragged of all the new technology they used in designing the 26' hull. All I know is he made it sound like they did it all on their own and if you look at it there is no simularity to the previous 26 or the Larry Smith 26 F1. I think Larry Smith also designed the previous 26 CV. I am not an expert, but I believe the Welcraft 26 was designed In-house.

Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
Customtouch thats why I asked it really didn't look like any of the other Scarab hulls. So what do you run now?

C'mon guys, as long as it isn't a Boston Whaler, blowboat, or a Ranger. :D :D Chit,, I dream of late model Top Gun, but I still love the Scarabs. :drink: :drink: |
Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
So how did the Wellcraft designed 26 ‘ scarabs perform. Is the 1996-1998 “Wellcraft Scarab” something worth looking into?
Thanks Speed |
Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
Speed, I was very happy with the performance of mine! If you are in the market for a good boat at a decent price I would not rule them out. There are plus's and minus with them (as in all boats) but if the styling of the boat suits you I would'nt be scared of one!!! They are a pretty solid built boat! There is a thread in general boat discussion called 26 scarab that you might want to check out. Probably 3 or 4 pages back by now.

Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
A friend of mine has had both the none stepped 26 and the Larry Smith stepped 26 and he said LS was a much faster and all around better built boat

Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
My dealer told me back in./... the 26 was an in-house design that started in 93 or so and finally came to production as a 96 model. Originally at tehdealer meeting in 94 for 95 boats but dealers did not like teh deck and cv comparison. not sure if it was one of the boats involved in their. SCRIMP program..
of every wellcraft scarab there is and how wonderful it may be/... I would always want a larry smith ride |
Re: Scarab 26 Hull Origin
How does the 1996-1998 26 “Wellcraft Scarab” compare to the 25 Baja Outlaw? Has anyone been in both that can comment on the difference in performance, ride? I know the Baja’s cuddy is bigger but the cockpit seems smaller but deeper, I’m OK with this trade off if the performance is better. I was not all that impressed with the Baja’s ride in rough water but I have never been in the Scarab so not sure if it would be about the same
Thanks in advance for anyones input. Speed |

Mike, can you tell me anything about the 26 sport
|
the 96-98 scarabs were built in sarasota FLA. they then turned into excalibur models built buy wellcraft. they were considered a sport cruiser after the model name change with a few more ammenities added.

If you are looking for a real 26 LS Stepped or not I have the mold we are starting the lay up on the first one built since the F1 boats but with the flat deck. We are going to build the first one with out steps because I believe that it was a much better boat with out the step and I have a little experience with the boat being that Nigel and I won the national championship with one. It should be ready for Desert Storm.
|
Post pics of your 26 once you have it complete, I love those 26LS boats. You building just one?
|
Will build as many as any body wants with any power package. we are getting the mold out and prepped next week so I will post as we go.

The mold is in the glass shop and getting waxed should be spraying gel next week. the first true Larry Smith 26 in about 18 years the mold was a little ruff but it's perfect now. Can't wait to run it I haven't run one since about 1998. Getting excited !!

Started a new tread under general discussion Building new old school Larry Smith 26

2nd Team Scarab 26 manufactured!
So who's going to resurrect George Werner's 1986 Team Scarab 26? She was originally Evinrude powered and Werner named her Kwik-Way. Later on she got renamed Made-In-The-USA and converted to I/O. This is the 2nd Team Scarab 26 made and definitely a cool boat. Price is right and I hope she finds a good home.
