33 AVS owners

i had a 29 with twin small blocks and loved it, sold that and bought my 30 O/B Spectre and like that even more but who wouldnt at 105++...in the market for another V. need something to run the ocean and want it to run 80 minimum. i've heard numerous stories about the 33 being the reason Wellcraft stopped building the AVS hulls due to them spinning out. Would appreciate if any current or previous owners could chime in with there opinions. Need something trailerable, easy to manuever, stable and average to above average for ocean running. Thanks

I have a 38' AVS with the stepped hull. As in any stepped hull design high speed turns can be dangerous and not recommended. I am very happy with my Scarb AVS and feel it is a good ocean boat considering it's size.

I Have A 1998 Straight Bottom 38,very Good In The Ocean(pacific)max Speed Is 80 Though, It Takes A Ton Of Hp To Move These Big Boats But 80 In The Ocean Is Unreal!

Re: 33 AVS owners

I currently own a 2000 33 w/ the volvo 600 dpx package. The boat is a solid performer in the ocean. It runs 90 - 92 consistently. My former boat was a 200 33 w/ 500 HPs. That boat was also a very solid performer in rough water. You will think you are in a much bigger boat. As you might guess, my confidence in the boat is very high since I bought another. You do have to respect them though. Of the 2 the DPX setup is defineitely better. Has a significantly different, more connected to the water, feeling. Read the Powerboat articles from 98 and 99 on both packages and I think you will find they are very capable boats.

Regards, Mark

Scarab 98,

Hard to say exactly what happened. Speed certainly was a factor. Seems like a blown outdrive on the starboard side contributed. toss in a little "all happened so dam quick" and there you have it.

Bernie, I also thought the boat held up pretty well considering what happened.

I have seen a few 33 avs running in 105+ mph with 750 hp motors . If I was in the market for a bigger V It would be on my list.
