For the record, my Larry Smith 38 (now owned by 427) also had a VIN that began with SQR. And as Mike J mentions, there is another VIN tag inside the cabin on the left side near the hull/deck joint.
Also, I don't think Larry Smiths were ever referred to as KV's. That was a model name associated with some of the Wellcraft boats. Larry Smith's were just....Scarab's.
Paul, your crazy with all that power in that boat ...I thought 102mph was plenty for that boat but I do understand the need to make it your own. It could be a handful to drive above 105 since, as Larry told me, he designed them to run no faster than 95mph which was plenty fast in the 1980's. Something about rocker and strake design. Good luck, have fun with it but BE SAFE in that monster...

I miss it alot but had to sell cause kids were no longer infants and want to go out on the boat too. I am in the market for a 38 Formula. If you've never been on one, they are as close as you can get to an 80mph Sea Ray
Here's a couple pics for old time sakes.

Thank you for the pics. I always wondered what kind of k-planes you had on that boat. They are HUGE.
The best to you in your hunt for a formula.

And depending on where the HIN tape is normally located in the bow area, mine is either:
A) still in the boat attached to the stringer
or
B) still in the sand in waters near Key West whereupun some of the nose got 'disassembled' during a race in 1985 If I recall correctly. Ron Hirschberg was running 3rd in points, John Connor on sticks and , I think, Craig Archer. It got stuffed so hard the nose went into the sand...
Mr. Archer is also the person that handled the repair, having had a new nose section made in the mold by Larry Smith. It was spliced at the second bulkhead, and workmanship is excellent.

How much did the Larry Smith boats change over the years ? What are the differences in cosmetics, design and build from say 1977-87-97

This is a LS Scarab......The hull number tellls the truth (most of the time) If it starts with a WEL...Then it must be a wellcraft....not an LS..........................................howeve r when we raced this LS hull it was sponsored by wellcraft of course.......This was the original SPLISH SPLASH boat
