I will be listing my 96' 38' Scarab on OSO. Just waiting to take photos for post. Yes, I spent 60k on new custom motors and drives out of the goodness of my heart for the next owner!!!

iamfaster,as you may know, I ended up buying JJONES P-38.I was looking at some old posts and was wondering what setup you finally went with on you boat? Props, stand off boxes shorties, top speed etc. I bought Justins boat w/o motors (he kept them for his current project) in April.I just received the new motors from the engine shop-freshle rebuilt twin 575 sci w/superchillers dynoed at 652hp and 700 tq. Justin went with 26 labbed B1's and said it did about 80.He said he got 625 hp out of the 525sc's with chillers but I don't know if he had them dynoed or not. I was thinking of trying this out first or maybe going with either 28"s or reworking these to about 27".Just curious. Thanks Mike

Congrats on your new toy. Thats a real nice boat and I believe JJ maintained it real well.

I am running 25" p5xhydromotives labbed with some added cup and aprox 1/2" additional pitch. They are the equivalent to 26" now. If the air is dry it will run 80mph(GPS)@5,500.

I have the props turning in which was 1-2mph faster after testing both directions in succession, everything else equal.

I also have a set of labbed 26" bravos that I can easily turn @ 5,700. If I was gonna keep the boat, I would add 1" pitch to these props as they are def a little faster then the p5x's.

My motors were spec and dynoed by Richie Zul between 625-650hp@ 5,500(crank) depending on the pulley.

XR uppers with IMCO -2" shorties with 1" spacers. I tried 1/2" spacers and ran 1-2mph faster, but i had some prop slip at 3200 which is where I like to cruise. Over 3,400 it was fine.

Also, I lost 1-2mph when I went to XR's but they are much more reliable then the old Bravos. I run them easy and change the drive oil often.

I think JJ was a little optimistic with his HP and speed claims. My boat never ran over 72mph with the old 525sc's. Im gonna guess he ran 75-76max after intercooling.

Turn your Bravos up to 27", maybe add alittle bow lift or cup?
You probably dont want to turn more then 5,400. Or you can try labbed 28" at 5,200 and increase your cruise. My guess is you will see around 83mph.

Scarab's are faster then most of the older production straight vv-bottoms, but will not respond to HP like many of the newer hull designs. But, NO BOAT WILL RIDE as WELL between 40-80MPH!!!!

Let me know how it works out

Thats a beaut. i love those grfx.

I have ques bout the 38's (& 33's for that matter) i notice some have a built in swim platform while others didnt. So how were these boats measured? Is the boat actually 38+' w/ the built in platform or less when u are measuring running surface?

MikeyFIN 09-01-2007 10:10 AM

Without the swimplatform I think.
Based on the 38KV which is the old 377 racer/Kaama edition.

iamfaster 09-04-2007 06:17 AM

37' 10" + platform= 40' overall
