1990 Scarab 21' Excel
 

Looking for any info on potential problems/things to look for on this model. A friend and I are looking into one as a small project boat. The boat hasn't seen water in at least 4-5 years, however appears in good condition. Due to some hornets that have taken up residence along the mooring cover, we haven't been able to get in yet and give it a thorough going over. Not even sure how it's powered or what shape the motor is in. From what we were able to see, the interior is in good shape. The lines and boots on the outdrive look good, but again...don't know until we can really dig into it. Like I said, all this is very preliminary at the moment. I'm not an experienced boater, however my friend is, so we're really just looking for any model specific things that we should be keeping an eye out for; but any input is appreciated, as I'm trying to learn. Appreciate any help!

I have a 91 excell and i was told to look at transom,stringers and floor. I have not had a problem or seen any rot in any part of my boat. Good luck its a fun boat. When are you looking to do something? Mine will be for sale shortly.

There's one on ebay right now, listed as 22. Don't know anything about the boat, just saw it there last night.

Did a few searches and didn't turn up much on the 21's.

Thanks for the info. At least it seems that model wasn't known for problems. No rush to buy with the season pretty much over up here. We don't have much cash to throw around anyway (5 grand tops), hence why we're looking at a boat that needs some love. This thing's been sitting on a trailer with just mooring and cockpit covers for at least 4-5 years. :( The cash restrictions kinda take us out of anything too nice at this point, but you never know...I bought my lottery ticket today! LOL!

I understand the extra cash thing but you may want to look at a boat that is ready to go. If you buy a boat that needs TLC you will end up spnding more than if you got one already done.

With the boat sitting for 4 or 5 years you need to make sure the engine is not siezed up and all the electrical is in working order.

The motor is going to be the sticking point. If it's seized or the outdrive is blown then we're not going to bother with it...like you said, likely end up spending more in the long run. Really appreciate the advice and will keep you posted and in mind if this falls through.

Its been sitting that long , if you aren't prepared for the possibility of having the engine at least rebuilt in the next year you are in trouble. It's a crap shoot ;ike by u said . you may be better with something in good running order. that's no guarantee either. Buyer beware!!!!
