A new old Scarab
Hey I was just checking in here. I just picked up a new project boat. I am new to the go fast stuff but old to boating. My find was a 1981 Scarab Kaama. I have been reading all about the Kaama and every thing checks out there, there was some talk about KV. There is no KV in the HIN, so what is it. Any info about the boat. Pic's soon, it going to be a big project. Thanks in advance Jim

Jim, what kind of power and outdrives does it have? From what I have learned in the early 80 there was no Scarab KV. The KV suffix started appearing around 1985? The 377 and the 38 KV are identical boats. You could get a early 80 377 either with the flat deck, wich were most likely called Kaama's, or you could get the raised deck version, which mostly had staggered motors. A marina by my house has a raised deck 377 that has side by side motors. I have a flatdeck Scarab with Factory 465 HP twin turbo 454's with SSM II drives. The boat has the race hatches. Board member 38KV has a KV that has a notched transom, one of the few that I have seen. Keep asking questions, we have all been in your place with buying a boat and not knowing any history about its evolution.

Thanks for the info so far. The boat is stamped Kaama in te Hin for sure. It's poweres with twin 370 's and TRS drives and C3 trannies. I hope that sounds right. It has a flat deck and raised engine covers and side by side motors. Was every one is talking is a notch transom its has that too. Pic's by this weekend I hope. My friend took some because I did have my camera on me at this time.I am yet to see them. I am getting the boat ready for a tow home soon. Thanks for the info Jim

Ok here the deal. I have tons and tons of new in box parts. Stuff like rams K plains, rugs seats carbs, props and the list goes on. The motors "did" run and freshin up. Drive all have gone though. Well what do you think?

good looking boat. If you bought it right and take your time to rig it right it will be very cool. Be aware that its gonna cost some bucks and a couple of years to complete, but nothing good comes easy.

Thanks. I figure about the 25-30 ish range at my cost. Plus I own a custom car/truck shop in the Danbury CT area http://evb.cc. Plus my good friend own's a mariana that sells Sunsation boats and he will help out with mechanical stuff were I get lost. I hope to have it done by mid to the end of the summer of next year. I will try to take photos on the project, but the north east is a bit tough in the winter. Jim |
What do you think the bare hull weight is after I strip the motors/trans/gimbles ect ect? Thanks Jim
|
I think I've seen this boat on e-bay, right?
|
No clue about ebay if it was on it. I found it on Craigs list. It was located in the Westchester area of NY. Do you know anything else about it?
|
no, I just thought I had seen it somewhere, but know nothing else... the hull looks clean for the year in the picture...

This boat has only 250 hrs on it. Also it has been in dry dock for 20+ years I was told. The old owner had plan to do a full resto job on and make into a fishing boat. I think that would have been some kick ass fishing boat. Over the years he has pile up some list of parts tons of stuff new in box still. So I hope this will be a easy project will all the new parts. Next week I hope to pull the motors/drives/trans/gimbles. The only major thing I see that there was some rot uner the helm area that was getting choped out and I hope that all the rot. It still needs more chopping. Pics of the work in progress soon . Jim

good idea...

Jim, how much did you pay for it?

This thread needs a BUMP ! It´s a ´81 377 Kaama Edition not a 38KV. HIN starts with a WEL so not a SRQ either. jimbo how´s it going...love these project threads. Ps All Wellcrafts rot easily IMO has to do with the coarse mat used in lamination. |
keep up the good work - jeff

Jeff how´s summer?
Jeff and Phughes...we need pics.... and Mike J can surely Jeff Help you too in many areas. Phughes... detail pics of your Turbo engines especially .... so 80´s :)..and So up to date too in fact... |
Well I hate to do this but its time to move on... :( I was unable to finish this boat build due to a car crash that left me unable to work like I did in the past. So at this time this boat hull ONLY and some parts are on the chopping block . I am not looking for much of anything at all. I moved on to a boat that needed my motor/drive setup..... If no one want this hull project I will start to part out some of the items that I will not need. Some of the items will include the wood trim for the interior in great shape .... a teak swim platform all the hatch doors and a bunch of small ( trim parts ect ect ) SO hit me up
