Scarab bow hatches, What to do?

So i recently bought a 1984 30' s-type. It has the 2 hatches for the cuddy cabin, they stick off the deck about 3 inches and IMO look like sh*t. I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for replacement's? Can new ones be purchased that are a lower profile or has anyone made something on there own? I can post a picture if anyone would like, Any ideas?

Are the hatches side by side, or front to back? Mine are side to side, which I believe the S types were too, and I had the same problem. I priced new ones, which were very, very expensive, and ended up painting mine instead. They turned out ok, I don't know yet about durability. I am curious to see what other people have done- anyone else?

I beleive the S types had front to back hatches. The raised deck Scarab 300 had side by side hatches. Are you looking for something similar to what the hatches on a Top Gun look like. They appear to be flush with the deck.

West Marine sells a variety of styles and sizes of hatches. If you cant find a lower profile one of the same size, go a little larger. I think all the old scarabs had plywood coring with glass on each side, so enlarging the hole is not a big deal.
I've also made hatches from lexan. It's available at plastics dealers. Plexi works too, but get it over 1/2" thick, or someone will stand on it and break it.

The hatches are front to back. I am not farmiliar with the top gun style hatches. Can you post a pic?

Flush mounted would be the ultimate IMO.

That looks real smooth! I dont need them to look that built in but better then the way they look now. Here is a picture of showing how much they stick up. Any ideas?

What did you decide on the hatches? I was looking for the same thing and have not found ones that are just right.

Not sure what I am going to do...Boat has kind of taken a back seat right now plus I have so many other things to do to it, the hatches are the least of my worries!

I replace mine with bomar hatches...A little lower profile and nearly a direct fit
