Alert: 1990 Scarab bolt on swim platform

Just a heads up for those of you with bolt on platforms that wrap around the sides of the boat.
I've had my 1990 34' Scarab since 1995. It came with a bolt-on swim platform. I make it a point to check the bolts and screws holding it to the boat each year, and I've resealed the joint with 5200 a few times since I've owned the boat. Some heavy seas this season finally took their toll. The platform was secured on the sides by SS screws and nuts, and the joint was simply caulked. Poor design to start with. The first point of failure appears to have occurred on the starboard side where water apparently entered between the platform on the side of the hull. I'm guessing this created a hydraulic effect, and a big wave finished the job. With wind and engine noise, there was no warning or indication the platform was gone. Somebody mentioned he could see some sort of damage to my stern when we were idling in. All 6 carriage bolts were still in tact, and thankfully all bolts and screws were above the water line. I've since installed a tubular type platform. |
Wow. Good thing it wasn't worse, I guess... post some pics with the tubular platform once it's installed!

Looks better without it!!

She was in the shop a few weeks for a full inspection and repair. Here's the new platform. |

I've had to boat so long, it just looks strange to me. |
That new step really looks sharp
|
Now you need to go out and get some nice shiny exhaust tips

It could have been a lot worse when I think about all the different scenarios. Had the integrity of the stern been compromised, it could have been catastrophic.
