Scarab P-29 #5 info wanted
About a year ago I purchased a 1996 scarab p-29. It is #5 of 29. If anyone here may have owned this boat or knows who owned it please drop me a line. Looking for general history and maint information. Thanks,
Joe |
Where was the boat from?

P29
If you call Bruce @ 847-336-9037 he will give name of dealer we received on trade from and they can most likely get previous owner information. I know it was a local boat here in Chicago.

LapseofReason here on OSO owned one for several years. The boat would have come from VA originally if it was his. I don't know what number his was, but he may be able to tell you if you PM him.

Joe,
I owned that boat. I bought it with 25 hours on it. If this is the same boat, it has Revolution Marine aluminum exhaust manifolds on it (which added 2 MPH). I loved the boat and hated to sell it, but I went racing in an MTI cat (Pair-a-Dice)for a couple of years and never used the P-29. Now I wish I never sold it. Best handling 29 foot v hull in big water I ever had. I will try to help answer any questions you have. Ask away! |
Joe,
By the way, the Revolution Marine aluminum manifolds added the speed because (A) They took 200 pounds off of the transom, and (B) They added about 25 HP, which when you add it up with that hull, comes out to a good 2 MPH. The P-29 already has the boat running flat and out because of the BlackHawks, and responds to less weight on the transom more than your conventional V. Another trick to gain a mile or two is to put the K-planes down very slightly (so they are just touching the water). It makes the boat think it is longer and since the Black Hawks are keeping the boat flat, dipping the K-Planes in slightly acts like an extension box, and believe it or not does not scrub the speed. There's a guy in the south that dropped some radical 550 HP small blocks in a P-29 and is claiming mid 90's on GPS. I want to find that boat, if any of you guys know about it. |

Hi Mark,
Yeah I think I do have your old boat, I found something in the owners binder with your name on it a few months back. Were you the one who installed the prop locks on the boat, if so do you have the keys? I have the form to request new keys if not. Also did you have any problems shifting the boat into neutral from forward. It seems maybe the cables have gotten stiff and may need replaced, sometimes it even misses neutral and shifts right into reverse. Blackhawks took quite a bit of getting used to, boat idles around 7.5 mph using only one engine. When did you sell the boat? I bought it in june of 2007. Did you do any other engine work? Was the boat kept on the trailer or a lift ( The bottom is in nice shape so I assume it was not kept in the water). So far I have replaced both water pumps - didn't need to, turns out the water pressure gauges were bad. Changed the gas tank sending unit and gauge. Planning on changing all of the gauges, luckily Gaffrig still makes that exact series! I have a few other questions, but that enough for now. Thanks in advance for all of your help! Joe |
P-29 = 90mph
I spoke with the owner of the p-29 that runs 90+ MPH a couple of years ago. He is the General Manager of a Pontac / GMC truck dealership in Alabama. I also own a stock P-29 and manage a GM store.
I know what he did to the boat, but can't remember his name and can't find his #. Remaped the pcm, installed larger injecter nozzles, changed gear ratio in outdrives, installed pro-chargers. Mine still runs a GPS 76 mph. and a great boat!! |
I will have a gps speedo in my p29 this summer. I'm running 434's that dynoed 740 hp each but we tuned them down to 650 for more reliability. I'm running 6000 rpm with no problem. Midrange is killer. We put about 30 hrs on it last summer, its a blast. We run on the upper chesapeake bay.

FastP29,
Sounds like a ride I want to jump into. Let me know when you are ready to sell that boat. |

You want pics of roosters and air shots - here they are...
Notice the similarity of the number six drive to the Black Hawk. Both are actually running very flat and straight, although we probably had the six drives timmed a little high here. |
Actually with the power of the Sterlings and the type of track, Rick and I could do a large outside loop, then trim down and hammer. Loose a little speed but sure is a croud pleaser!

It finally warmed up around here so I pulled the cover back and took a few pics.

Looks killer! Post some more pix of that P-29.

Still have the radical P-29 ?
FastP29,
Do you still have that P-29 with the 434's ? What did you end up with for speed on GPS. Is it posibly for sale? |
joep29,
Did you do anything else to the #5 when you owned it? When did you sell it? Do you still have the owner's manuals, etc? I have it now, as I am a boat dealer in NE Indiana right in the corner of Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. We love the boat, drives out extremely fast, and looks just as good. Thanks!
