Hey Scarab Owners...Need Info on a 29
 

I'm looking online on a 1999 29' Scarab and it is listed as a 7.5' beam. Is that correct?? It has twin 350 small blocks and that seems like an awful narrow beam for twins. Thanks for your help

it my be with small blocks. 7'-6" beam cuts through the water nice the old magnum marines had that setup with small block's and they ran and road good. takes less power also to push it through the water but big blocks won't fit

7'6" is right. Kinda tight but not bad to work on. Mpi's can be a bear to get to the fuel pump and cool fuel as they are under the engine. Carbbed mags are a little easier to work around.

If you have an extra 10K to spend on the 29 Scarab, buy a P-29. I owned one for two years, and wish I had it back. The Kevlar hull makes it a 5500 lb boat, which is at least 700 lbs lighter than a normal 29 Scarab. The P-29 also has Black Hawk surface drives, which give you an awesome hole shot, and 6-7 MPH on the top end, plus better handling in rough water because the hull is flat and narrow. Saves wear and tear on the drive too, because you don't have the major launch in 4 footers like a conventional bravo which want's too lift the bow. You can actually get a P-29 'on top' of 4 footers at 75 plus and not get pounded. Did it many times on Winnebago going back to Oshkosh.

The P-29's are awsome.:D If you get a regular bravo boat they respond very well to the 2" shortie's, it's well worth the money.As far as the boats concerned, for the money, as far as ride, they are hard to beat in the rough. I love mine!!:cool-smiley-011:

I've been hanging around the Pantera forum for awhile. But I noticed this Scarab in boat trader:

So I dropped in over here and notice some nice things are being said about these boats.

A few questions:

1-Does Mercury still make the BlackHawk drives?
2-Are (were) BlackHawk drives worth a damn?
3-I notice some Scarabs are called "Larry Smith" Scarabs and some Scarabs are preceded by the letters AVS. Were Scarabs made by different companies?
4-Is the Boat Trader P-29 a fair deal? (The trailer is not much to look at.)
5-Are Scarabs in general good quality boats?

1. I don't think blackhawks are still being made.
2. On certain applications blackhawks do very well. the P-29 and blackhawks work great.
3. Larry Smith is a custom race boat builder in Cali. and is like the father of the Scarab. He leased the name SCARAB to Wellcraft to build production boats under his style and name.
AVS was the name for Wellcrafts stepped hull. Air Ventilation System.
4. $29,00 I think is fair.
5. Depending on who built the boat, Wellcraft had some issues with their builds in the late '80s, not sealing thir screw holes and what not, and remember they were a mass production boat. I think '90s-the time they stopped building they improved their systems. but as any used boat it depends on how it was taken care of.
A Larry smith boat would be in a class of its own on par with any great custom builder. see thread

Help me out if I have any wrong info. This is just what I think I have read.
