I Need a good Scarab - 29 or 31 foot?

Hello all,

I need a good offshore boat (mostly east coast US) and I am looking at a few different Scarabs, I have found late model 29 foot versions, and slightly older 31 foot ones.

Other than engine differences and age, is there a reason to lean one way or another? We mostly need to run off Virginia coast and be as weather independent as possible.

On the cool side, I get to get one, but on the bad side, I need to decide rather soon, so I am looking for recommendations and potential candidates.

Radar arch would be good.

Also, thoughts on the differences between a 1999 29 foot scarab / 1990 31 foot scarab and a 1990 33 foot fountain?

Thanks

Peter

Atlantic off va , get a bigger boat. 38 should do better. The 29 is a narrow beam , pretty light , rough (in the ocean ) boat. The 31 is wider, heavier , and has big blocks. The fountain is like 27 feet long.

I looked at both a few years ago. I ended up with the 31' because it was considerably larger boat in the cabin area. 29' + is light weight handles good w/ 7'6" beam, good on gas w/single bb or twin sb and easier to tow. bad is very small cabin (4' headroom). 31' + larger cockpit, larger cabin (4'6"), more room in engine compartment to work on.Bad -2k lbs heavier ,Bad twin bb gas hog, Good luck--Mike

Thanks for the recommendations. I have been in touch with aqua mania (theirs is one of the boats under consideration).

The fountain is an older execution that is 33 feet long. I am also looking at an older 34 foot scarab. All pretty much have the same engines / drivetrains, so it is really the condition and the differences between the lengths. (454 magnums with Bravo 1s)

I will try and call the different recommendations this weekend.

I have a 1998 29, I have been toying with the idea of selling it. I bought this boat in 2000 (second owner) the boat was sold in late 99 and the buyer had it for only a short time and jumped to a 38. It was originally ordered by a customer that backed out...this boat was equipped with every possible option from the factory, custom paint, electric bolsters, sectioned rear seat, scarab beetle on hatch, kplanes with dash display, snap in carpet, 502, pop up cleats. I am a SCOPE board member and I have used this boat in the ocean and Havasu, and Lake Mead. I keep this boat here at home so it is constantly cared for, it has a cockpit cover, and a custom fit full drape cover in black.
The boat has always been worked on by Dan at Team Archer Marine who has rigged many boats with Larry Smith. In 2006 I had the motor rebuilt complete by Dan, since the rebiuld I have maybe put 25 hours on it. Newly added items, 2 brand new deep cycle Optima batteries with brand new alluminum billet battery boxes, the motor is basically stock with EMI Exhaust...boat runs top speed at about 62mph...not the fastest boat, but I have vowed to keep this boat turnkey. In 2007 Dan installed a red Binini that is completely removable. In 2005 I purchased a brand new Aluminum Triple axle trailer with 4 discs, and seven custom wheels (spare includes complete disc and hub with bearing buddy. This boat has been in Poker Runs Magazine, on Extra on NBC, in numerous SCOPE Videos and catalogs for Brembo and other related material.
