Differences 28 Excel vs. 29
 

Hi

I have a 28 Excel i´m thinking about a change to a single engine 29 Scarab.
We don´t have many here in Germany, so i know it inside only from pictures.
Does anybody know the difference of the cabin ? Is it higher like the 28 XLT or just the same like the Excel ?
Is the Hull realy so much better in rough water ?
I think the 29 is slower than the 28 compared with same Motors, is this right ?
What´s the weight of a single engine (actualy) ?

At the moment a "big thing" in Germany : CE Certificate
Does the 29 Scarab´s have one ?

The 29 was offered with twins and has a higher freeboard and more usable cabin. Also has a windshield instead of a fairing.

Are all the single engine Scarabs changed from dual to single or are they original singles

Not sure on the cabins.

The scarab will not be CE certified.

I had a buddy that had a 29 I rode with him on a pretty good bit and worked on it some also. To me its a lot more boat than the 28 I had.It has a good bit more room up front also.


How much more would it cost to step up to a 30-34 ft Scarab?

In Germany we can only tow a trailer up to 3.5 To. (3500 Kilo) with a SUV
So a 29 with dual engine is about 3.8 - 4.0 To. with the trailer, to much. My Tahoe can tow 3.5 To. for more i would need a big Pickup (3500 or 4500) with Airbrakesysthem and a trailer with airbrakes.
Single engine could be around 3.2 - 3.4 To. thats ok
Also at the moment we pay for 1 Liter Gas 1.5 Euro thas about 9,- USD/ Gallon (no joke)
A dual Big Block boat use about 100 Liter / 26.5 Gallon a hour (i think) thats not my range
We trailer the boat all the time and we boat on a river (Rhein), or for holiday´s in Italy Lake Garda.
28 or 29 foot is ok and payable for me
I have never seen a 30 foot or bigger with single Motor (maybe 700 or 800 hp) this could be the absolutly the border in weight.
There is a 31 Scarab with dual 7,4 MPI for sale in classifieds look´s realy good but its to much to change ( Truck, trailer, insurance maybe an additional "allday car" so the total cost in a year is to high.

Do you know about the ride in rough water.
The 28 is not bad, the faster the better on rough water.
The 29 should be better ???

a 29 with small blocks would not be any worse than a single big block

So the weight of a twin put you above your towing limit. I figure your gas was around 8.00:(The 28 is a little wider.My 28 Scarab with a 365hp mag would run around 62.My buddy 96 29 had a 415hp mpi,23 3bld,5000rpm it would run around 62, had a nouther buddy with the same style boat but with a procharger and it would run around 72.I would say the 29 will handle and ride a lot better that the 28.Its a deeper boat, stand up bolsters, the cabin has more head room.I don't have any experience with a twin 29 Scarab,but Ive heard they run around 75mph,

My 28 with full fuel and the blower motor was 5895, I had a fiberglass pontoon style lift and with my buddy's 29 on it would barley lift it, it was about 5 inch deeper in the water on this floating lift compared to my 28. the lift was rated at 6000k, I am guessing its around 00lbs more, The claimed dry weight of the 28 is 4600.Theres a thread in the Scarab section with a lot of info,search:D

The slide door cutout looks absolutly like mine, but inside it could be 2-3 inch higher and a few inch longer. Mayby the bottem and everything inside is a little deeper because the deck don´t looks higher from outside.

The standup bolsters are not what im looking for. In the 28 Excel i´ve converted everthing from the original " round" seats to Automotiv performance seats, they support the shouldes very good. With a seatbelt it holds me down even in havy water or big jumps. i don´t need to grab the steeringwheel to hold me in position seat and belt does it perfekt without any pain in my back like before. I love it.
The most thing what im looking for is a little higher cabin ( when in turn from left to right in the berth my shoulders contact the inside deck.
And a softer ride in rough water ( had a 24 Pantera before, wich was softer over the sometimes 5-6 foot very short waves on our river, but not better because of the 4 foot less the the Scarab)
I think the 29 is my next boat with singe motor around 550-600 hp to be in the 70´s
the only thing is the screen on it that thake´s out a little the "offshoreboat" feeling ( when we can talk about this with29 foot) the Excell looks better there i think.
Hmm the saison starts just now here maby somebody wants my 28 Excel ( at the end off the saison) then i have time over winter to find one ship it to Germany, get a CE Certificat (must now in Germany) make a trailer, can´t use the US- Trailer´s, no lisence for the "US brakes" (typicly german law´s) and so on

sorry i don´t saw that you answered.

I saw youre Boat before looks good, the 600 hp are nice too.
is the red stripe a red stripe or ist it purple?
Is it sold now ( out off the clasifieds)
If i had the money at the moment it would be very intresting.
But i have the 28, have never tried to sell it before and it´s hard to sell Boats because off the gas price 1.50 € / 1Liter.
I know its the best time now to buy anything from USA because of the Dollar / Euro exchange.
Also i have the problem with the CE Certification. No CE no Licence to use it in Germany. It´s posible to get one with some EFI Motors. Don´t know how it is with carburated engine. Best ist when it comes with CE to the german Custom, then it´s normaly no problem.
At the momen it take´s up to 6 weeks to get a place on a ship to Europe and the cost is about 5000,- USD that´s 2000 more than 3 years ago. a Oversea container is about 2800,- but i think the wide of the boat (with trailer) is more than 94". I´ve heard they are 100" outside so maybe about 95" inside. Hmmm. Nice to to think about but i´m not able to buy realy one at the moment since i have mine.

28 excel is actaully the old 26 spyder with a built in swim platformwhen in the mold, It was only in single engine. The 29 is a differnt boat that was made in single or twin and they also made a true 28' XLT that had no platform that came in twin applications.
